Monrreat, July 16. The supplementary report of the direc- tors of the Consolidated Bank causes much disappointment. It says that the result of

, careful examination has been to satisfy the directors that after making ample allowance

for some heavy anticipated bad debts the assets of the bank are good value for amounts ranging from $1,250,000 to $1,- 500,000, or from 60 to 75 per cent. of the present par value of the stock.

UNITED STATES.

Boston, July 16.

One of the severest storms ever known here passed over the city about four o’clock this afternoon. Much damage was done. Hail fell, breaking many windows.

Serious disasters are reported in the har- bor. One vessel capsized and four women and boys were drowned.

Other losses of life are probable.

Many of the finest trees in the city were blewn down.

Despatches from various points through- out New England reported the sterm un- usually severe. Great damage has resulted.

New Yorg, July 16. In the trial of Chastine Cox, to-day, counsel for the defence said that ene por- tion of his defence was that Mrs. Hull was not dead until after the post mortem ex- amination and there was no proof of death at the prisoners hands.

An officer from Boston has been here the past few days looking for wool reported to be smnggled from Canada. He has de- tained a large quantity here.

RUSSIA. Sr. Pererstuns, July 16.

Cholera has made its appearance in the Government of Smolensk. A terrible epi- demic of diphtheria continues its ravages in Bessarabia. The epidemic has been raging for seven vears, carrying to the grave in some districts almost all of the rising gen- eration.

it is denied that Dr. Weimer, the alleged accomplice ef Solovieti, has been tried and sentenced to death. The trial has not yet been fixed.

A Berlin correspondent states that, not- withstanding Schouvaloff’s denial, there can be no doubt that the Russian troops are marching on Merv.

The construction of a canal from Cron- stadt to St. Petersburg is progressing rapidly.

A Bucharest despatch announces that the Ministers tendered their resignations to-day, and the Deputies immediately as- sembled for consultation.

A previous despatch stated that the Min- isters could not secure a majority in favor of the emancipation of the Jews, which the powers urgently demand as a condition of their recognizin., the independence of Rou- mania,

It is believed that if the Jews are not emancipated, Austria, Russia, and Turkey, who have already recognized the independ- ence of Roumania by appointing represent- atives at Bucharest, will recall them.

It is feared that any further attempt to coerce Ronmania might be the commence- ment «f renewed complications in Eastern affairs.

We learn, by the Mortreal ‘‘ Witness” of Saturday last, that HE’ 1nnd McKinnon, son of Murdock McKiniw., Esq., of Lot 14, was admitted to the ba. of the Province of Quebec, on Friday last. Mr. McKinnon entered the Law Faculty of McGill's Col- lage in 1875, which he attended for three sessions, when he graduated with marked distinction as a B.C. L. He was also in the office of Juseph Doutre, Esq., Q. C., during his collegiate course. Mr. MeKin- non passed a highly creditable examination which lasted nearly two days—and was

GENERAL GRANTS MOVEMENTS AND INTEN- TIONS—FINANCIAL REFORMS. Wasuineton, D. C., July 14, ’79.

The Sunday Chronicle of this city, which is the representative of the Taney family and of General Grant's friends generally, has an important statement relative to that gentleman’s movements. It is to the effect that General Grant authorizes his friends, to say that he will not probably return this year, and, possibly, not until after the time of holding the National Conventions next year. He ihas beer much annoyed, accord- ing to this authority, by the persistency with which a certain class of pretended friends have pressed him for re-election to the Presidency, and is disposed to take the advice of his better friends and not allow himself to be used by the bummers, who expect to promote their own fortunes, only, by his resumption of political authority. In order to kill time, the General will travel in South America and elsewhere, and positively decline} to come home unti! all receptions in his behalf, for political effect, shall be out of the question. The impres- sion has been growing for some time that the General would not allow himself to be used in politics again, and this impression was conlirmed by the very significant fact that Senator Conkling and other friends of Grant have named Senator Windam astheir choice for the nomination—a thing it is as- sumed they would not have done had their favorite been in the field.

As evidence of the unceasing vigilance necessary to the conduct of se creat a Department as the Treasury, there willsoon be issued statements showing the work that has been done in lopping off old abuses in various directions. The undervaluation in kid gloves by the chief importers at New York was a glaring wrong; and Assistant Secretary French did weil to push his in- quiries and his reforms. It will be shown that hundreds of thousands of dollars will be saved annually to the revenue by the changes made. The matter of the coloring branch in sugar was another sore place. By the reforms instituted, half a million dollars already stand to the credit of the Treasury that would have been lost otherwise. The sugar men in Baltimore have felt the heavy hand of the Treasury officials, having lost one important case of fraud against them, and they have about given up the fight. The Secretary has employed the ablest ex- perts to expose these frauds. The forth- coming statements will contain many inter- esting facts besides that to which [ allnde.

The Potato Bug in New Brunswick.

The Potato bug is busily at work in the valley of the St. John. As yet, perhaps, the advanced guard only of the great army coming has entered our territories. But the destroyers are in a sufliciently large force in anumber of our up-river settle- ments to require the owners of the invaded fields to exert themselves energetically against the invader. If these owners do net bestir themselves with the vigor de- manded they will rue their negligence bit- terly by and by. Having had such timely and numerous warnings they ought to be well prepared to fight the foe. Me is not by any means to be despised, nor yet to be deemed invincible. His ravages are ruin- ous to the slothful and faint-hearted, but not much to be dreaded by the vigilant, the intelligent and the active.

Pretou’s Inpustrries Revivine.—The coal trade shows a great improvement. The Acadia Oo. are shipping to erder all the coal they can raise. The Halifax Company have shipped more the past week than they have done for years. The Intercelonial is also doing a good business.—The N. 8. Forge Co. are driving quite a business this summer. They are now completing orders for the Grand Trunk Railway, in making railway axles and ships’ knees fer some Quebec firms. The managers, Messrs. Fraser & McKay, are very energetic young men, and must make their mark at an earl day as leading manufacturers of iron wink in the Provinces. About twenty-five hands are employed, all of whom are making extra time.—-Hix. Herild,
