\Opposition Leadership.

Mr. Laurier’s Contemplated Retirement.

Toronto, July 26.

The following despatch was sent all over Ontario last evening from Montreal :

“Mr Laurier is seriously considering re- tirement from the leadership of the Liberal party. It is well known that Mr. Laurier has foralong time been dissatisfied with party prospects. He does not think he is receiving

‘the support he should from Ontario. Mr.

Laurier is also a comparatively poor man, and he finds it hard to give his time to the party and to attend to the practice of his profession. The only reason why he has not given up the leadership long ago is that he wes afraid he might be accused of deserting his party in a crisis. It is very likely that, if the Liberal convention is called, Mr. Laurier will ask the party re- presentatives to choose a new leader. Mr. Laurier will shortly take up his residence in Montreal, where he will practice his pro- fession.”

A Crazy Woman’s Act.

Lonpon, July 23. In the village of Gahan, County Roscom- mon, Ireland, a womau seized her three children one after another and held them head dowaward in boiling water until they were dead. The woman then attempted suicide and was fatally scalded.

Sap Acctroent —A very sad, and what proved a fatal accident, o curred in the card- ing mill of Mr. William Wells, Alberton, on Wednesday last. While one of Mr. Wells’ daughters was at work iu the mill the picker flew to pieces, one of the fragments striking her on the head, fracturing her ekull. She

was picked up uoconscious a short time after, and, despite all efforts to save her, she ex- pired on Saturday morning Mr. Wells and family have the sympathy of the community
