' | - Srr,—I had the pleasure of being pre- 'sent at the midsummer examination of the ' Upper Prince Street School, at the close of 'which addresses were made to the children | by the Lieutenant-Governor, the Mayor, Rey. Mr. Lloyd, Dr. McLeod and the Chair- |}man of the School Board, all speaking in jcomplimentary terms of both teachers and children; and well dol remember this last | named gentleman, in a short, happy speech, telling the children that he had something tu say to them which he was sure they ‘would be delighted to hear, namely, that ‘they would have a week's extra holidays, and the schow] would not open until Mon- day, the 3rd of September.

This announcement from the Chairman of the Schou! Board was responded to by a loud clapping of hands from the children, and smiles of juy from both teachers and children. In consequence of the announcement, sme of the teachers and mauy of the chiidren had mate arrangements to spend the latter part of their vacation off the Island, or away from home, therefore im- agine their disappointment to find a notice in the papers signed by the Secretary of the School Board notifying them that the schools would re-open the 27th day of August, just one week earlier than the time »romised.

And for the deepening and

enlargement of the summit level of the Cornwall Canal, The construction vf a new lock at each ‘of the three interior lock stations on the Corr- /wali Canal between the Town of Cornwall and )Map'e Grove; the deepening and widening the channel-way of the canal; construction of bridges, &c.

For the works at Galops, at the Lock-keeper’s House, Galops. For deepening tne summit level of the Cornwall Canal, at Dickeuson’s Landing ; and for the new locks, &c., at lock-stations Nos. 18, 19 and 20,at the Town of (Cornwall. Printed forms of tender can be obtained for the respective works at the places mentioned.

In the case of firms there must be attached the actual signatures of the full name, the nature of

The respective DEPOSIT RECEIPTS—chequer will not be accepted—must be endorsed over to the Minister of Railways and Canals, and wi:l be for- feited if the party tendering declines entering into contract for the works atthe rates and on the terms statedin the offer submitted. The deposit receipts thus sentin wil] de returned to the respective parties whose tenders are not accepted.

This Department does not, however. bind itself to accept the lowest or any tender.
