Lone swallow was unhappy. Lonesome people usually are un- happy. One may be alone and not lonesome. .and so not unhappy. But Lone swallow was alone and truly lonesome. There were no others of his kind left in the neigh- borhood. The big flock of which he had been a member had gone on toward the Land-of-always-summ. er. He had n left behind because 01 a was as in one wing. He couldn't keep up with the flock on such a long journey. and he was wise enough not in start. For days he had waited. hoping that that wing would get stronger. Now it really felt stronger. He was sure now that he could make the long Journey. but he didn't want to make it alone. He was young and never before had made that long flight. How was he to know where to go and where not to go?

Nights were getting cool. The swallow folk do not like cold weather. Because they live largely on insects that fly. cool weather

So it was that Lone Swallow often breakfaeted late.

Lone Swallow did see what Peter see it. He began to twitter in happy ex- citment. Then he took in his swiii. wings. One after another they mrched on this wire twitter- ing iiappily. Sitting close together they made a long line.

Lone Swallow flew to join them. He was in such ii hurry he didn't even say good-by to Peter Rabbit. Peter didn't mind. He was used to that sort of thing. He was ciirlous.
