Mr. Gordon Lord, Tryon, operator on the same machine, was also dismis- sed and his place taken by a party supporter from North Bedeque. Neither of the Liberal appointees are returned soldiers. No charge

Recently The Guardian carried a news item detailing the restrictive measures adopted in the United states to prevent the slaughter of migratory game birds. Only one month's shooting every year is al- lowed, and the restrictions are rigid. The quastion was that of reducing hunters‘ killing privileges on ducks and geese, by the stoppage of bait- ing and the use of live decoys, and shortening the open season. or else thdifistoppage of all waterfowl hunt- ing this year. Those issues were put up to forty-eight States, and forty- two State Game Departments sat dumb until two or three of them

The new Federal laws proclaimed by the President on August l stopped bait- ing, live decoys, sink boxes and batteries, and reduced the open season to thirty consecutive days. 0n the whole, the game received about one-half of the killing stop- pages that would have accrued from a whole season of no shooting. But will that alone save the stock of bieedwg birds? Mr. Hcrnaday doubts it.

According to mainland papers the Charlottetown Exhibition is the best, and best conducted. this side of Toronto. We ought to be proud of being its supporters and boosters.

There is one thing about the Al- bertans-they like variety in their elections. No fewer than 239 men and women have offered for 63 seats‘. in the legislature. The unsuccess- ful will have plenty company in their rejoicing.

The Social Credit Candidates in Alberta have been designated the "ICU." group. This is a plagiar- ism, however, as the first Liberal Government of which Mr. Lea was a member originated that name through substituting “I.0.U.'s" I01‘ Sinking Fluid bonds.

One excuse given for passing over Mr. E. P. Foley's claims for the Public Health portfolio, is his "Dung Hill" speech on election night. in the exuberance of his verbosity ‘Mr. Foley broadcast that he had beatenhls opponent on his "own dung hil1," meaning the West End or Summerside. Naturally all Summerside resented the reflection.

Mr. Charles l-ieber Blanid- who succeeds Hon. W. J. Roche le chairman of the civil Service Com- mission is a p. muted ranker. Be entered the Government service in i909 at the first competitive exem- ination held by the Civil service Commission. l-Ie was born at Pem- broke, Ont, in 1886 and is a grad- uate of Queen's University. He served overseas during the war with the 30th Battery, Canadian Field Artillery, was appointed chief examiner for the commission in 1921 and commissioner in 1033.

Hon. H. H. Stevens contends that the various measures passed by Parliament as a result of the Royal Commission's findings were inade- quate and fall shclt of what the commission had in mind. He refers particularly to the Federal Trade and Industry Board. whose func- tions are to be carried out by the Federal Tariff Board, which, he claims, has sufficient work to do without having extra duties as- signed to it. He is also dissatisfied with the machinery provided for supervision over companies incor- porated by the Dominion. The steps taken to prcvcnt the exploitation of investors by high-pressure stock salesmen he regards as quite un- satisfactory.

As to the claim that Hon. H. H. Stevens left the Cabinet because the Prime Minister wanted him to apologize to Sir Joseph Flavelle, the authorities at Ottawa claim this untrue. They simply wanted him to make amends and apologies for publishing the celebrated pam- phlet condemning the actions of certain companies which were be- ing investigated by \ the Price Spreads Commission before the de- fence had been heard. The Prime Minister took the ground that Mr. Stevens had no right to take advantage of his position as a Cab- inet minister and chairman of a special committee of Parliament to censure fellow-citizens and to give judgment on the evidence when only half of it was in.

Sir Joseph Flaveile, it is under- stood. did not. complain personally about anything Mir. Stevens said about him. directly or indirectly. The complaint which resulted in Mr. Stevens withdrawing from the Cabinet was in the form or a vol- uminous brief submitted by another aggrieved party purporting to show how the former Minister of Trade and Commerce had misrepresented the facts in his speech to the Con- servative Study Club. which was, later printed in pamphlet form and subsequently suppressed when the Prime Minister directed the Mm- ister‘s attention to the unconstitu- tional nature of the proceedings.

The late lamented Hon. Fred J. Nash. Editor of the Patriot, used to tell a story appropriate to the present occasion. Mr. Nash was e member of the Bell Government, but could hardly persuade the Pre- mier to loosen the purse strings for any purpose whatever. At length, however, when election hove in sight, Mr. Bell opened out with a generosity that surprised his most intimate tlriends and colleagues. Mr. Nash got him to give a job to a "clamouring“ supporter to report on the condition cf the Provincial Building generally. He was told to take his tools. consisting of a square, saw, hammer and travel round on inspection bent. He fol- lowed instructions but at the end oi the third day came to Mr. Nash and said:—"This job is getting on my nerves. Thai-e is a man follow- lng me all the time and I think he must be a prohibition detective." Said the Honorable Fredz-"That fellow is your-helper; you should [get acquainted with him."

The high tariff Liberal organ, appended to a misleading compar- ison or trade returns, adds: “I. This decline in trade has made your taxes more burdensome. 2. Not only that, but fewer taxes have been collected because incomes were lower and fewer goods were ex- changed." ,

Wily not make at least some approach to truth? In matter of fact, instead of a decrease in in- come tax there has been a. decided increase under Bennett adminis- tration. This income increase is not due to any material balance of trade increase, but to the more im- portant fact that FARMERS ARE GEITING 50 PER CENT. MORE FOR THEIR BUTTER AND CHEESE, 100 PER. CENT. MORE FOR. HAMS AND BACON. 40 PER CENT. MORE FOR, BEEF‘ PRO- DUCTS AND POULTRY, 20 PER CENT. MORE FOR ROOTS AND GARDEN TRUCK (potatoes ex- cepted) THAN THEY REALIZED UNDER THE DEVASTATING MACKENZIE KING TRADE AND TARIFF TINKERING.

If true, and perhaps it is, that "declining trade has made taxes more burdensome," ihcn who is to blame? Naturally thc government whose policies created the “decline in trade." And this fact impales the Mackenzie King party into hopeless condemnation. Why? Be- cause it was his government that in- augurated the decline in trade which has proved most destructive to agricultural interests.

Let us quote from the King gov- ernments own Bulletin of Agricul- tural Statistics.

"The iotal trade in farm plo-

ducts for the fiscal year ending March 31, 1930, was $639.528.184 as compared with $924,557,208 in 1929. A DECREASE OF $285,029,024." JUST THINK OF IT; A DE- CREASE OF ALMOST THREE MULLION DOLLARS IN. THE ONE LAST FIILL YEAR OF LIBEIRAL ADMINISTRATION. But let us read further. It makes it still worse for the trade twisting of the Liberal organ:-—‘=AL— THOUGH THE DECREASE IS COMMON TO BOTH IMPORTS AND EXPORTS, THAT OF THE EXPORTS IS MUCH MORE PRO- NOUNCED! What an indictment! Isn't it exports that brings rcvenile to a country into the pockets of the people? Doesn't this enable them to pay more income taxes?

But yet WOFSE’. Imports declined, in 1029-30 $1,063,295. with its con- sequent. loss of duty collection. which loss had in be replaced by taxes upon the people, which the Liberal scpliisiry declares is “mak- ing taxes more burdensome." Mr. King the vaunted wizard of iradc prospesity was in power.

Putting its foot still further in the hole tile Patriot declares “Pro- duction cf butter has increased from 283,000,000 lbs. to 342,000,000 lbs., but because of the ruinous prices prevailing the vifue of this great production to dairy farmers much less than the output in the years or Liberal rule." It gives no data of when and why it ventures on this misleading statement and adroitly avoids touching on selling values in confirmation.

The rmson is plain. Under the‘ Bennett government. there was not only this enormous increase in pro-! duction, BUT ALSO A FIFTY PER. CENT INCREASE IN THE MAR- KET VALUE OF THE BUTTER. Every market price quotable on the subject confirms this.

In the fiscal year ending March i931. under Mackenzie King p:ices, $90,914 W0rth of poultry was ex- iported; "biasing into markets" en- abled shipment of $285,962 worth in 1934.
