Sratistics’ obtained from official returns demonsirate that the imports of Canada from Great Britain have, this year, been much larger than they were last year. On the other hand, it is,shown that the trade of Canada with the United States has decreased. The Montreal Gazette adverts to the dan- ger of over speculation in Montreal conse- quent on the return of good times and says : ‘When good times come, then it is that every man should stick to his own trade and legitimate calling, and not go rushing iate things that he knows nothing of, for it will be found out sooner or later that the laws that govern trade canuot be infringed gpen with impunity.” Stick to your own trade and calling is a good rule for both geod and badtimes. if every one would do so, it is certain that there would be less of bad times.

‘Death of Hon. John R. Carroll.

Many of our readers.will regret to hear ef the death of Hon. John R. Carroll, which recently occurred in St. Louis. He waes native of this Province, being the eldest son of the late Mr. Patrick Carroll, of Pisquid Road, Lot 49. When twenty years of age he left this Province to seek his fortune in the United States. His career ig the land of his adoption has been most seccessiul, and the following notices, clip- ped from St.. Louis papers will shew the esteem ia which he was held by fellow citi- zens. Be was born in Prince Edward Island, Can- ada, received good educational advantages in hie youth, left his home to seek his fortune, end arrived in St. Louis about twenty-three years ago. After about three years of clerical werk he accepted a position in the house of Francis Fisher & Co., and seven years ago be- game a partner in the firm. ‘Though never actively engaged in politics, at the solicitation of his qiente he became a candidate from the Fearth District for the Lower House of the General Assembly, and was elected by a hand- some plurality. Grace Egerton has lost none of her extraorcin. | ary powers since last here, in fact, we thin, : the general opinion is that she is better than ever, her voice certainly has more volume,and many of the new songs introduced last even- ing were vociferously applauded, notably so «‘Down in a Coal Mine,” ‘The Fairy Queen” and ‘‘Here Stands the Post.” This latter is a magnificent production, and evidently brought out the well known patriotism of the little Island. Being given in a splendid castume as “Britannia,” added mueh to the effect, and when the fair artiste waved the pretty silk ‘Union Jack,” the audience fairly cheered and insisted on a repitition of the last verse. This song alone is worth going to the Hall to hear. Space will not allow us to dwell on the many amusing features given last night ; espe- cially so was Dicken’s scene between Betsy Prig and Sairey Gamp by Mr. and Mrs. Case ; this convulsed theaudience. The elegant and distinguished ‘‘ Belle of Broadway” entranced them, while the.‘‘ Wizard” in a beautiful In- dian costume <zstonished them. Little Dolly Dott (Mr. and Mrs. Case’s infant daughter) now contributes her share to this amusing per- formance. She sang charmirigly ‘* My Grand- father's Clock” and, in character, ‘‘ Real Jam,” a most attractive little song which was rendered so well that it brought down the heuse and had to be repeated. ‘This pretty little artist displays so much talent that we predict deawill evintnally emulate her talent- ed parent. The performance concluded with a very laughable comic sketch—-‘‘Married and Settled”—in which Mr. and Mirs. Case kept the audience in one continuous roar of laugh- ter. Mr. Case’s solos were, as usual, all that could be desired. There is to be one more performance (to-morrow evening) when these talented impersonators are to appear for posi- tively the last time. A new entertaininent is to be produced for the first time here, and a Carte de Visite of Grace Egerton is to be pre- sented with every reserved seat ticket.
