The Public Finances, The Montreal! Gazette reports that the statement of revenue and expenditure for the current fiscal year from July Ist, 1886, to April 30th, 1887, is very satisfactory. For the last two years the transactions have produced a considerable deficit, due mainly to the fact that the cost of sup- pressing the rebellion in the Northwest was defrayed out of current revenue, and also in part to the decrease in customs re- ceipts through the decline in the value of staple articles which reduced the receipts from ad valorem duties. To date the im- come has been $28,160,936 as compared with period of the preceding fiscal year, a gain of some $850,000. The principal sources of revenue yielded as follows: —

Some considerable variations in the ac- counts, it will be observed, occur. The decrease of $700,000 in the income from interest was caused by the cancellation of the indebtedness of the Canadian Pacitic Railway company to the Government on account of the loan of $20,000,000 to it, which loan was extinguished last summer. Customs receipts are larger by $2,000,000, an increment arising out of the prosperous condition of tradeand the larger importation required to satisfy the legitimate consuimp- tive demand. On the other hand the excise revenue is considerably less than a year ago, from the fact that in anticipation of important changes in excise duties in the session of 1886 very large quantities of liquor were taken out of bond, and the equilibrium is only now being restored. The gain in income trom the post office and public works, under which latter head is included railways operated by the Govern- ment, is the result of the growth of popu- lation, more active trade movement and extended postal facilities.

The expenditure of the current year to April 30 was $25,985,548 as against $28,- 850,249 in the same period of the preceding year, a reduction of $2,865,000. Almost the whole of this arses out of the item of cost for the suppression of the uprising in the Northwest, there having been spent for this service only $210,055 this year as compared with $2,856,246 in the year 1885-6 to same date. On April Ist a year ago the expenditure exceeded the revenue by $1,542,674, while now the revenue exceeds the expenditure by $2,175,388, making a total gain on the ten months of $3,718,062. On May ist of this year inter- est on the public debt to the amount of $1,274,005 fell due and was paid, and that about closes the interest charge for the fiscal year. When al] the accounts are in it is now reasonably certain that the tran- sactions of the twelve mouths ending with June vext will show a smal! but sufficient surplus, and that after paying the whole cost of the rebellion out of current rev- enues.
