A Syow Ficut took place on Friday, on Yonge streét, Toronto, between the mer- chants and the street car company. The merchants objected to have snow heaped in front of their doors, and the company tried to keep the track clear. The result was a snow battle which lasted the greater part of the day, and terminated towards evening in the blockade of a number of cars and a re- sort to sleighs on the part of the company.

Parent Gazetre.—We have before us the specimen number of the Cunadian Pa- tent (razette and Trade and Mark Register, published in Ottawa by Mr. Gibbs, patent agent. The paper is very well got up and presents a fair typographical appearance. It is a venture in a new line,—-a sort of a new departure in journalism,—and we wish it success. It contains a vast amount of useful information, and every person inter- ested in patents should see it.

James Harper, of Goble’s Corners, Que., tried to drive his horse across the railway track at Princeton in front of a rapidly ad- vancing train ; his cutter was torn to atoms by the shock, and he was pitched up and back, striking in his descent the head-light of the locomotive, and knocking it off. He then fell on the front of the engine, between the cowcatcher and boiler, where he lay in- sensible. The engine was brought to a stand a little beyond, and the injured man was rescued from his perilous position.

Tue wife of John Armstrong, residing on the line of the Hamilton & North-Western Railway, has eloped with one of the railway laborers. She boldly told her husband be- fore she left what she was going to do, and the old man could do nothing to stop her. The tears blinded his eyes as he held out his hand and said, ‘“‘God bless you.” She marched out of the mansion in which she had reigned so many years its mistress, with her bundle on her arm, and joined her new master, who had already gone on ahead On foot they went up the hill, and were soon out of sight.

A cat was heard mewing somewhere in the vicinity—nothing unusual about that, The office officials thought the cat was under the floor or held samewhere in durance vile— pothing unusual in that. Just as the floor was about to be torn up to liberate pussy— the St. John mail bag was opened; and the cat jumped out of the bag—something un- usual in that, sure enough. A CORRESPONDENT of the St. John News writes that ‘‘a terrible accident occurred in Studholm, yesterday afternoon, and only a few miles fram here, to 4 man by the name af James. Coates. As far as I can learn Coates was in the woads witha span of colts attached to a sled. A man was a short dis- tance from him cutting down a three, the crash of which caused the colts to start,’ dragging Mr. Coates under it, thereby sepathiieg in the top of his head in a ter- rible manner. The cclts ran off towards home, arid the poor man lay for nearly an hour before he could be removed from his unfortunate position. Dr. John H. Ryan was called to attend the wounded man, and did all that medical ski]! could do for him : yet it fs thought he cannot recover.” 'Coates ied on Friday night.’

Smyth, late Superintendent of Insurance, has gone away to his home in Oswego, says the New York ‘ Telegram,” and the burden of bringing out the annual insurance report de- volves upon his successor, whose name also is Smyth. The way this Smyth got the office is reported as being quite curious. It is alleged that the other Smyth was pushing his investi- gation among the rotten insurance companies in New York inconveniently far, and that sev- eral of these swindling concerns clubbed to-

gether and raised a fand of $25,000 to have him removed, and this was done through the in

strumentality of three republican Senators,who are supposed tg have got the money. One of them went to Washington and got Roscoe Conkling interested by proposing that his old friend, this J. F. Smyth, the Postmaster of Albany, who would certainly be superseded ifter the 4th of March, be nominated for Su- perintendent of Insurance. Conkling brought his influence to bear with the requisite effect on afew friends Republican Senators to sup
