Turee Scott Act cases were commenced to- day, before Alex Hayden, Esq., and William Heard, Esq., J. P’s., for Queen’s County. The case of James Curtis, Esq., Inspector of License vs. George O'Neill, Half-way House, resulted in a nonsuit, and another case brought by the Inspector against John Finlay, of Vernon River Bridge was also nonsuited. The case of H. H. Pollard against John Binns. Vendor at New Glasgow, was postponed until the 28th inst.

The native who wounded Cookson, the British Consul, during the June riots at Alexandria, has been arrested.

Eighty Frenchmen, and fourteen hundred African laborers are about to construct a railroad between the Niger and the Senegal Rivers. As there is mech danger antici- pated, the operations will be protected by a military column.

The Land ‘League Funds,

There was much excitement and liveliness manifested here to-day in consequence of the opening of the Great National Conven- tion. Parnellis presiding. At present there are eight hundred delegates present. Nearly all the suspects who have been im- prisoned were present. A committee is to be appointed to summon an elected con- vention. This Convention wi!l select an executive to control the affairs of the Land League. A statement of the balance in the Land League has already been sub- mitted to the Convention. The total funds are £244,820. The expenditure is:—for re- lieving distressed tenants £50,000; for state trials, £15,000; for general expendi- ture, £158,000. The balance sent in amounts to £32,000. /. letter was read from Egan, who is living in Paris, tendering his resignation as Treasurer of the Laud League.

[It is believed that the principal object of the Irish League will be the prosecution of a vigorous agitation forthe amendment of the Land act as a preliminary so the abolition of landlordism by purchase. Special stress will be laid on the definition of Mr. Healy’s clause so as to secure to tenants the entire value of | their past and future improvements on the ad- mission of lease-holders to the bencfit of the act and on the advance of the entire purchase money by the State at a low rate of interest, the principal to be paid during an extended period. Proposals will also be advocated for the purchase of poor, rack-rented estates for the benefit of tenants. The claims of laborers to better dwellings and allotments will be in- corporated in the programme. Laborers will be iavited to co-operate in obtaining such im- provement in the Land act as wiil enable farmers to deal generously with them. The industrial revival will be assisted by loc] organizations for fostering the demand for Irish manufactures Other points ef the pro- gramme are the payment of membersof Parlia- ment, the extension of the franchise and the establishment of a system of elective county governments. It was understood that at the conference a deputation from the Home Rule League will announce the dissolution of that body and the resignation of its functions into the hands of the new Irish League, of which national self-government will be the basis. }

Some flour hes been thrown over- board. According to the latest reports the steamer is still hard and fast. The crew is still on board.

The cargo of steamer Preston, ashore near Berwick, is still being thrown over- board. Three tugs were in attendance yesterday, but nothing could be done to- wards floating the vessel. This morning the Preston remains broadside to the sea in a bad position. No lighters or boats can get alongside of her.

Three London detectives have arrived here with three of the crew of the Glad- stone, on which Westgate, the self-accused assassin of Lord Frederick Cavendish and Under-Secretary Burke, sailed for the West Indies. The sailors have been sub- jected to a searching examination, The authorities are determined to thoroughly sift Westgate’s story, so as to quiet the public mind. Westgate will probably be brought here for the same purpose; but the polce firmly adhere to the belief that | Westgate is crazy and his assertions un- | worthy of belief.
