On the 1st of November the Patrict quotes the statement of the Mail’s Ottawa correspondent, that the result of Sir Leonard's advertisement is that,—

‘The total amount tendered for was of Tae, of which $977,000 was accepted,

And fails to see in the latter fact, a com- plete reputation of its former slander about “the lack of confidence in the busi- ness of the country !”

—Some of the papers say that Lord Lansdowne is cordially disliked by the people of Ireland. On the other hand, it is said that the statement is wholiy untrue. But whether true or false, it is certain that the good qualities of the people of Ireland ‘are heartily admired by Lord Lansdowne. In reply to an address presented to him in Ottawa,

‘Let methank you, sir, for your refer- ence to myself and my connection with Ireland. I have spent a considerable por- tion of my life among Inshmen, and that portion has not been the least pleasant. It has enabled me to appreciate the many admirable qualities which members of the Irish race have brought to this country;

opportunities offered to them on this side of the Atlantic have enabled them to turn to excellent account. I am glad to know that Lady Lansdowne is standing by me to receive her share of the congratulations which you are here to offer. She, like myself, is bound to Ireland by many pleas- ant associations. We have, both of us, lately experienced at the handa of our Irish friends much of that warm heartedness for which the Irish race is proverbial.”

A man named Brown, from the North Shore, enter. the Railway yard at Surn- merside yesterday morning. He approach- edthe shunting engine and drawing the attention of the driver, said, ‘*If you move that locomotive it is at

character, and might have some authority. giving this command, Mr. Brown took from his pocket a piece of white chalk

and placed a ‘Broad R.” on_ the side of the engine. He then proceeded to the,

Freight House. On his departure the driver of the shunting engine preceived that a ‘*Broad R” had been placed—no doubt by Mr, Brewn—on the Station, Freight House, and all empty cars in the yard. Entering the Freight House he bade the clerk lock the doors, and allow nothing to be removed without his permission. He then proceeded to put the

The station master made a vigorous protest against Mr. Brown’s high handed proceedings, but he was treated as the idle wind which the broad R gentleman respected not. The Station master then telephoned for the police. The officer arrived with that alacrity for which Sum- merside policemen arenoted. The Station master, on his arrival, ordered Mr. Brown's arrest. Mr. Brown protested and questions of authority arose on all sides. The officer demanded Mr. Brown’s authority for seiz- ing Government property, Mr. Brown’s hand descended into « remote corner of his pants pocket and drew therefrom A COLT’S REVOLVER.

It was a time when life was in danger. The policeman was under cover of the revolver, and a movement of Brown’s forefinger would cost his life. The yard master saw this, and bounding forward threw Brown upon the floor. The station master was op him in a moment, and with one hand on his throat and the other grasping the revolver, ‘he deprived the would-be assassin of his weapon. The villain was then fettered and

Subsequently he was arraigned for ex- amination before His Honor Stipendiary Magistrate Howe. The revolver was ex- amined and every chamber was found to be loaded. Dr. Jarvis gave evidence, and pronouiced Brown te be a crank. The prisoner was then remanded for further examination.

It is whispered if Summerside that Brown is one of those grits who believe that the N. P. has ruined Canada, and that it is now time to seize Government property for the benetit of all concerned.

The English Government, it is reported, has decided to accept the proposition of the French Government to pay Missionary Shaw an indemnity of £10,000, with their apology to Great Britain, as a satisfactory se ttlement.

For the past thirty years there has been a steady decline in the production of gold in the United States. In 1853 the highest production was rerched, the total fiures be- ing $65,000,000. ‘The figures for 1880 were $36,000,000. The production of silver in 1853 was $50,000,000; in 1882, $47,- 000,000.

Despite the disapproval of the Colonial Minister, the projectors of the explorations in New (iuinca have determined to proceed with the expedition. A steamer has been chartered and will take six months’ provi- sions, tents, and arms. Each subscriber will obtain a land warrant for 1,000 acres.

By the end of October the Canadian Pacific tailway will be finished to the summit of the Rocky Mountains, 962 miles west of Winni- peg. Gna the eastern division the work is pushed 105 miles east of Port Arthur and 9,000 men will be kept on this section for the winter, The whole line from Montreal to the Pacitic will be completed by October 1885.
