Qtiite understandably the main concern of the dairy farmers meet- ing in Hamilton was the protection and future of the industry. Veget- able oil products have for the past few years been displacing a por- tion of the traditional market for Dairy products. the result has been that Canadian government has been purchasing large quantities of but- ter and at the same time permit- ting the unimpeded flow of vase!- abic oils into this country-

The Government purchile of butter and the importation Of vegetables oils constitute an econ- omlc contradiction and on first glance by the average person it would appear sensible for the Government to take action de- signed to control the movement of oz: into Canada from the United States, a country which is now busily engaged in blocking on the least pretext the flow of our farm products across the border.

This may not be the time of year to discuss beautification of our rosdsides, roadsides which are pros- ently covered with varying depths of snow. But in a few months the travelling public will have exposed to its view the accumulated dis- order of tumbled down fences. scrubby growth of trees, weeds and unsightly banks devoid of any vegetation. While the Rural Beautification Society has been offering prizes for roadside im- provement, interest in the com- petition has not been encouraging. more recently The Community Planning Association has interest- ed itself in attempting to deve- lop a number oi projects on an experimental basis. Regardless oi legalities the roadside is in the minds of the public a part of the farm, are we doing a good job in this regard in creating a favorable impression?

Central Parmers' Institute - 131'!

At the annual Meeting of the Central Farmers' Institute held on January 18 and 19, 1917. gratifica- tion was expremed at the appoint- ment oi Michael Coughlln and W. R. Shaw as district representatives and the opinion expressed that their knowledge of Island condi- tions and their interest in the welfare of their native Province will make their services valuable and very acceptable. With respect to the latter gentleman it is al- most needless to remark that the prediction made in l917, has been amply borne out.

The announcement of Mr. Shaw's retirement on March 31, will be received with resret DY the many farmers of this Province who have been in the favorable position of Judging Mr. Shaw's contribution to Island agriculture- In the minds of many Iarmifi Mr. Shaw and the Dept. of Agri- culture have been one and the same and the public will have cause for disappointment if his energy and ability are not still to be available for the betterment of the Province in other fields.

HAMMOND CRABBI

The death occurred at Beech Grove on September 19 in his 86th year of Mr. Hammond Crabbe.

Mr. Crabbe was born at Milton and lived all his life there until June 0, 1953. He was twice married. Both wives predeceased him. His first wife was the former Isabel

Mrs. William Robertson. Kings- boro. His second wife was the former Bessie MaoPhee oi Char- lottetown. to this union were born five children. three of which died in infancy one son Robert at Mll- ton: one daughter (Inrna) Mrs. Reginald N-unn, Winsloe. survive. who will ever cherish the memory of a dear and. devoted father. There are also a number of stand- chlldren and one great grand child to wfiom he was deeply attached. being a man especially fond of ehlldrm.

Funeral services were held for Mr. Crabbe from the Cutcliffe Funeral Home on Sopternlber 23 which was largely intended. Ser- vices were conducted by TOW. L. Blaikic of Brookflt-id, assisted by mmior '19 lo KM-Mia '3 'v 'A9H Church. Milton. Hymns sung. "The Lord's My shepherd" and "Abide with Me". Interment took place in Brookfield Cemetery.

ELK INVADE FARMS

To the east of our home and hard by the main road, stood g picturesque crescent-shaped grove of maples and birches. ”'rhii-d growth timber" granddad called it. Anway. it was a lovely grove where my brothers and I spent long hours during the summer months hunt- in: bird's nests and watching the nimble-footed squirrels leaping from branch to branch, or run- ning up and down trees and scold. in: us all the while.

Winter came and we shared reb- blts and carried them home to help- eke out the family larder. If you never have eaten a rabbit pie then all I can say is: you've missed .a delicious dish. Grandma was not noted for her cakes and tarts, but when she made an Irish stew or a rabbit pic, that was something else again. She would cut the rab- bit up into small pieces, add a shower of vegetables. and cover- the whole with a halt-inch pie crust. When this concoction was baked in the oven to a crisp golden color. she would proudly announce that we might all gather about the large kitchen table and (in our bellies. Rabbit pie - as grandma made it was a dish fit for a king.

In those days rabbits were as numerous as flees on an alley clog. One winter we snared and sold some 120 for which we received the princely sum. of 326. "Wolf Boy" Is Terrified Of

LUCKNOW, India Reuters A frightened, snarling "wolf-boy" ducked his head under bed sheets today as hundreds converged on Balrsmpore Hospital here to see the nine-year-old curiosity.

The boy was found naked, heav- ily scarred and walking on all fours in a train car (near here 12 days ago. He was ravenousiy hun- gry for raw meat.

Today, Dr. N. Sharma, medical superintendent of Bairempore Hos- pital, said the boy, named Rama by the hospital staff, now accepts boiled. meat and drinks milk, but remains terrified of civilization.

"He hides his head under a sheet when anyone approaches." Sharms said. ”We have to watch that he doesn't run away."

Ramu is constitutionally normal but still moves about on all fours and has the double set of upper incisors of a wolf.

Eats Like Animal

Portugal Builds Vessels For U.S.

LISBON Reuters - Poi-0ugal's growing ship-lbvulldlng industry this year. for the first time in his- tory, will begin building naval ves-, sels for a foreign power, the United States.

Under the terms of an "off shore" procurement system con- tract. Portuguese shipyards will build tihrce coastal escort vessels in iron and two anti-magnetic mine-sweepers in wood. The total cost will be 250000.000 escudoes about 58,750,000. -
