Dear Editor,

The following letter has been sent to the proper authorities on the matter. The letter deals with the problem pedestrian face while trying to get to classes. If anyone shares the opinions of the author of this letter, they could write to the same people. The more people who write, the better the chance of action being initiated.

This letter is written in regards to the problem that pedestrian students have in reaching the U.P.E.I. campus. A considerable number of students live in the Marysfield development as well as in the newly constructed University Towers apartments,and these students must cross University Avenue daily. This is a hazardous and nerve wracking experience which many students must face at least twice a day.

In the past there have been several attempts to make city Council aware of this problem. As you may be aware, a motion dealing with this situation was brought forward for Council’s consideration but was dealt with quite hastily and without the neccessary care and attention. The students of UPEI would

appreciate more consideration for their health and well being.

Another problem that pedestrians have is the access to the University from West Royalty. Several years ago the West Royalty Community Council had a sidewalk installed from the Charlottetown Mall to the commu- nity limits, just opposite Enman Crescent North. From this point on the students must walk on the shoulder of the highway. The students of UPEI feel that there is a need for the installation of a sidewalk connecting West Royalty to the campus. There is great potential fora tragedy to occur and these situa-

tions should be dealt with before anything happens. We thank you for the time and effort that you have given us pertaining to these concerns. The Council’s

cooperation on these matters would be greatly appre- ciated.

In regards to your editorial of October 3, 1991: Are you nuts?! With all due respect, I feel you do have some minor points, but if you are going to comment on such a hot topic you should do some further re- search. 40% all waste in landfills is paper (trees - remember). There are forty year old newspapers tha’ have been hauled out of landfills in perfect reading condition. Landfills are not comparable to compost | heaps, which are organic and great fertilize -- Green | fertilizer. the problem we are trying to solve is | global pollution. This includes toxic dumping, oil _ spills, waste reduction, poisonous gassesreleased | into the air by factories or even poorly made produc in our homes, and many other things. Also, recy- | cling, whichI don’tseemuchmentionofinyour | editorial, is very important. Asa business student | you should be able to appreciate this fact: The sobey’s chain of stores uses plastic bags made of | recycled plastic. This saves money, causes less pollution and uses the same amount of energy to | produce as regular processing. The diaper dilemme you should leave until you area father.
