Jacksonville is situated on the St. John’s River, twenty-five miles from its mouth. It has a population of about 30,000. Bay, Ocean and Pine are the principal business streets. Those streets are paved with cypress blocks, on end, which costs one dollar and two cents per square yard. The other streets bave simply the natura: paving (sand,) into which one sipks to the ankles, Most of the streets are well shaded by numerous stately oak and other native trees, among which are many orange trees, heavily laden with the “* golden fruit. Jagksonville is noted for its many large and elegant hote!s, some of which cover a whole bléck each. A good many of the invalids who come here for their health and stop at those hotels, find, when they are presented with their first hotel bill, that they have all at once become *healthy enough to Jeave for their homes by the early morning train, Jacksonville has water works, ‘‘ mule” cars, but no electric light, except a few lights which some of the larger stores and hotels run for their own convenience; the city being lit by gas, and that of a very feeble nature. Business is very dull in Jacksonville since the yellow fever epidemic. A good many business people have not returned as yet, but

List oF REGISTRATIONS.—A Digby, N. S&., paper publishes a list of registrations in the office of the registrar of deeds, ete., for the county last year, from which it appears that upwards of 500 deeds were recorded. The mortgages recorded numbered only 72, and as the number of mortgages written off number- ed 62 the farmers of that county are evident- ly enjoying a prosperity quite in contrast with the stories that come to us from across the line.

Pennsylvania Heard From.

‘READING, Jan,f28.—The Sheriff's office’ here is full of bills advertising the property of various farmers for sale. No Sheriff for years has been as busy as the present incumbent. It is estimated that he levied on the farms, stocks and agricultural implements of thirty to thirty-five farmers in the country in the last few months.

Farmers say that farming no longer pay, and that they are obliged to go under. Farms which were purchased a few years ago for $175 per acre, now sell for about $125.”

Says the Moncton Timee: This is not en- couraging news for our farmers, who are promised a market of ‘** 60 millions.” Don’t you think under the circumstances the farmers of the United States when they re depressed would keep their market to hemselves.
