SENATOR FERGUSON’S SPEECH.

We have not heard or read a more telling arraignment of the deceitful and reckless acts of the the Laurier Administration than that of

Senator Ferguson before the L }

and which he enforces by reference to the

Senaior Ferguson points out that “in the private business’ of life, we trust men according to our. ex-

perience with them and the reputation they

have for acting honestly and telling the truth’ We never think of trusting important affairs of aprivate nature toa

man who has deceived or cheated us. The same rule must obtain in weighing the worth of public men. It would bea bad thing for Canada if the electors were to cease judging their public servants by the degree of faithfulness with which they keep

their solemn promises.” These words ought to sink deeply into the minds of all electors. There is no

reason why Governments should not be judged by the same rules that are appli- ed to men in private positions. Butif this were done, neither the lLaurier.Tarte Administration nor the Farqubareon Administration would stand an hoar.

The fact that the Government have set | a price of $10 an acre on the lands which } last year they would have practically given away to Messrs. MacKenzie and Mann for nothing, ig one of the points in Senator Ferguson’s speech that ought to strike everybody. If these lands are worth $10 an acre, the country (would for the sake of the accOmmodation afforded by 150 miles of tramway, for the use of which passengers would have had to pay) have given a property value of $37,500,000. As a result of the rejection of the Drummond Railway deal by the Senate, in 1897, the Government was subsequently able to enter into another arrangement by which the country saved a clear million of dollars; and as @result of the rejection by the Senate of the MacKenzte-Manao contract, the country has, upon the Goveroment’s own showing, retained in its possession, lands that are worth the vast ot $37,000,000. Surely the Senate has sufficiently proved its useful~
