intramural Breakdown

Again this year, the intamural program offers a wide variety sactivites throughout the week. Keep in mind that intramurals befor you the student, so itis only what you makeit. If you have ny suggestions feel free to tell us about them.

Broomball — Wednesday 6-8:00 pm

5;0ms are supplied but players need sneakers or other suitable »twear. They may also want to wear hockey or soccer shinpads , kneepads.

Broomball is very similar to hockey, with six players per team the ice at once. Therefore, we suggest that a team consists of ‘tween 12 - 15 players per roster. Depending on the turn-out yere is a possibility of making games shorter and thus more sames.

Special note: Marion and Bernardine — get a team out soon. Volleyball — Tuesday 8:30 and 9:30 pm

Congratulations to all the vets and the folks from Blanchard Hall who have come out to participate. If day students are inter- sted in forming a team, just call one of us with a team list.

3-Man Basketball — continues Sunday nights as scheduled

This is co-ed for now, but if there is enough demand for all- female or all-male teams then we can run two leagues on the same night.

Phone Paul with your roster and get on the schedule.

Indoor Soccer — There’s a possibility of forming this co-ed league on Sunday afternoons or early evenings depending on the response.

A maximum of six players per team with four players per team on the floo at one time. The games are 20 minutes in length. If you are interested in this activity, simply call one of the below numbers with a roster.

Remember, all these activities are co-ed and are for fun, so get out and get involved!

Education Wake at U of Alberta

EDMONTON (CUP) — A wake complete with coffin and bagpipes was held recently by a University of Alberta student organization Anti-Cutbacks Team recently to emphasize concerns about “the death of education.”

Although media threatened to outnumber students at the mock ceremony, ACT volun- teer David Tupper said the response was “fairly good” considering the organization has been campaigning actively for only about a week.

At the wake, Student Union vice-president external Mike Hunter spoke of the need to get

involved with the ACT cam- paign. He advocated writing to MLA’s “to let them know how serious we are about our future, about our education.” “Because if we don’t,” he said, “we have given them a man- date to do what they want to with our education budget.”

Hunter outlined the dangers of allowing the “potential of... Alberta as a province to be stripped away.” to the point where students are being told by employers that an Albertan education is not good enough. ‘“‘We want someone who is educated, not processed.”

Hunter emphasized that “if weact collectively, well thought out, well planned, and as a student council we come up

with some alternative solu- tions, then we have a very real

chance to make a difference.”

Hunter’s speech was pre- ceded by a mock funeral for Alberta Education, including an eulogy by ACT information coordinator Matt Hays. Dur-

ing the funeral, six banners representing the former state of education in the province were placed in the coffin. After Hunter’s speech, the coffin was carried out by ACT pallbear- ers, led by a bagpiper.

The light tone of part of the wake and relatively small turn- out left some U of A students in attendance with theimpression

that the ACT organization’s program may not be taken seri- ously. ACT workers are hope- ful that the resulting student

attention and media coverage will increase awareness and involvement at the university.
