A youre woman named Elizabeth Murphy, was found dead in a house occupied by a Mrs Ready in St. John, N. B., on Tuesday. The death occurred under suspicious circumstances Mrs. Ready and her two sons were arrested on suspicion of having murdered the unfortun- ate woman.

McGregor scored 103 points out of a possible 140, and: carried off the prize for this season. Capt. Stewart came next with 102 points; Lieut. They were taken from Point du Chene in the steamer ‘‘St. Lawrence.” The Prince County exhibit was landed at Summerside, and the Queen’s and King’s County stock wss brought to Charlottetown. The steamea arrived at 1 o'clock on Sunday morning, and landed all the animals safely.

AN incendiary fire was discovered in the | stable of Mr. John Connolly, Lower Spring Park Road on Saturday night. It was lit ia the straw, and when discovered was burning through the roof. A few buckets of water sufficed to quench the flames. The fire alarm was sounded, however, and a general turn out of engines took place. The injury to the stable was slight.

Scuvrman’s Vacation.—The London Academy of September 15th says:— Professor Schurman, of Dalhousie College, Halifax, Nova Scotia, has paid a long visit to Germany an England this vacation, and has obtained a grant of the Early-English Text and New Shakspeare Societies, yearly — for his English classes in the college. His last Shaks- peare classed number sixty-two. His examina- tion paper is a most refreshing contrast to the Cambridge and usual English papers. He pays his pupils the compliment of believing that they have preception, judgment and imagination.

Excrrement over the failure of the Ex- change Bank, Montreal, has been revived. It has leaked out that Craig, president and general manager, has made himself advances toa large amount. The definite sum 1s not

itively known, outside of official circles; ut it is estimated from $150,000 to $250,000. He asserts that his liability is covered by se- curity. A strange feature is that the direc- tors’ liabilities in the last monthly return to the Government were sworn to be only $19,233. This shows a great discrepancy, and share- holders sre talking of holding a meeting for the investigation of the affair.

Tue barge “William Great” broke away from her tug on the 27th of September, while on passage from Bay City to Detroit. The mate, two sailors, and cook, were blown ashore on a raft at Godrich, Ontario, on the 8rd inst. They left the barge on the 2nd, and after spending a terrible ~—_ on the raging waters were cast ashore at daylight on the morning of the 3rd. They had giveu up all hopes of ever reaching land and were in a used up condition when found, Part of the time they were waist deep in the water. They were lashed to the raft. The night was cold and a heavy gale blowing, which nearly caused their death. None had a mouth- ful to eat for many days, owing to the cabin being washed overboard, carrying everything away, with their ——*< provisions, etc., and leaving them nothing but the lumber to shelter them, During the day the captain and others of the crew were floated ashore on raits, one of the sailors coming ashore on & Piece of plank. The Annual Prize Meeting of the Queen’s County Rifle Association was held on Kensington Rifle Range on Wednesday and Thursday Jast. PROPOSALS OF THE CONTRACTORS.

Messrs. Irving and Muttart, the Winter Mail Contractors at the Capes, had an inter- view in St. John, N. B., on Saturday, with Messrs. McDonald and MeMillan, Post Office lnspectors. The improvements which the contractors propose for the present are: A boat house and a house for the men to live in on both sides—Cape Traverse and Cape Tormentine—the house at Cape Traverse to be a comfortable buildiug giving sufficientgroom for building and re- pairing boats. The contractors also pro- pose the construction of twelve ice-boats and two water boats, that the houses on both Capes be included in the contract, and that the contract extend four years.

The inspector’s views are considerate and liberal jin the matter. What they recom- mend to the Dominion Government will likely be accepted.

A Serious Railway Accident.

Last evening the brakes ona street car got out of order as the car reached the top of a steep grade on Sandusky street, Alle- ghany city. The car ran through the gate at the crossing of the fort Wayne Railway and collided with a passing freight train. The car was wrecked, and all the passengers in it, twenty-five in number, more or less injured—two, fatally.

Mr. Wadman, her pastor, officiated at the funeral. }
