Of course she did not know. as Bill did, ‘that a plane had actually landed on Broken Win88 Island. Bill had kept! his resolution not to tell her, even by means of a note; but he spent much of his tune thinking about it. He resolved to be very careful in his keeping of the tabu for several days, for he felt that he was not in favor with Armnsu at the present. The chief had reiused to talk to him the day following the irip to Broken Wings and had not joined in the daily hunt with his men. Bill supposed he was making some kind of magic against the devil whose tracks had shown so plainly on the island. for Aruman had called six of the older men to him and had engaged wiih them in some mysteri- ous rites before the ugly idol in his house. This much he :Qflifl’l¢d from the gestures and speech of Ahiwsya.

Bill went hunting on that day and found good sport. Ahiwaya armed him wiih a long spear, a bow and arrow, and. a boomerang. This latter weapon required much practice and Bill found that he could mpke only one true throw out of every five the first day he tried to use it. With Ahlwsys and a party of men he went into the forest and far toward the interior of the island. About noon a herd of wild pigs was discovered and the chase began. ‘rhey succeeded in killing three of the anions‘; and bore them back to camp slung over long poles carried on the shoulders of the huniers. _

After supper that night Bill sn-etched himself outside his quarters and watched the women moving about the campfire. He couldsce Katherine quite plainly, and realized

Bill and Ahiwaya stripped and joined" them. and as Katherine the day before found she had never seen such expert swimming and diving among women, so mu found these brown men the finest swimmers he had ever seen. They spent the morning hue and in the afternoon they took out two canoes and went fishing.

Bill found that no one could excel these natives in knowledge of the water and the things that lived in ‘it. They seemed to know before they pull-ed in their lines what would be icaught on the hook. A flashing smile greeted the certainty of an edible fish, a frown heralded the arrival of a. small shark or other scavenger fish. Bill caught his share and helped carry the ‘spoils back to camp where the women were to clean and prepare the catch for supper.

For two days Bill tried to elude Ahiways. but Ahiwaya had his orders and refused to let Bill go out of his sight. Not even the offer of the ther-
