Fortune W. I. Anniversary Recalls 20 Years' Activity

During the summer of 1936 Mrs. George Jackson attended an In- stitute Convention in her home dis- trict of Annandale and while there she talked with the supervisor on the way in which a district went about organizing an Institute states the 20th anniversary report of For- tune W.I. It was found that n can- vass would have to be made in or- der to get the women of the dis- trlct interest and when 10 or more were ready to attend the super- visor would come to organize and given instructions on how to con- duct the meetings.

Mrs. Jackson visited the homes and on September 11, 1936, Miss Louise Haszard met with those interested at the Orange Hall. The first officers elected were: Presi- dent. Mrs. Reg. Coffin; Vlce-Pres- ident. Mrs. Ernest Aitken: and Sec- retary-Treasurer. Mrs. Leon John- ston.

FIRST MEETING

The first regular meeting was held on Sept. 22. 1956 with to mem- bers and 2 visitors present. Before the end of 1936 we had 23 mem- bers; In 1941 - 21: 1946 - 13; 1951- 23; and in 1956 - ill mem- bers.

We chose the school as our spec- lal community project.

Our first meetings were held at the Orange Hall. then we met at the home of Mrs. Earl John- ston until the Junior Room at the school was furnished as an Insti- tute Room. When this was opened as a second classroom we began holding our meetings at the var- ious homes.

We decided that to answer the would be rather dull. As we look over the record book we find it was answered in various ways. anything from "a cent for each pound of our weight" to "A Coun- try belonging to the United Na- tions."

During the past twenty years we raised money in various ways in- cluding - whlst parties and danc- es. (and in this connection we might observe an entry in the min- ute book which goes to show how times are changing. i

In October test it was decided lolpay 50 cents to have the fires started and the hall cleaned for the wltists.

We made patchwork aprons. (money was sewed under: each patch). sale of Xmas cards. pan- try sales. lottery of d t ” ar- tlclea. blankets and a nursery mat booked by the memt .. gentle- man's night card parties (the bus- bands were invited to come along to pay for the tickets). concerts. picnics. dessert parties. auction partiea. canteen at the Hall danc- C.

FOR SCHOOL

Articles purchased for the school included. stoves. fountains.

gift. gave farewell gifts to mem-, bers moving away. sold institute cook books. WAR EARS

During the war years the mem- bers knitted socks. made quilts. children's clothing. afghans.

We donated money to the Can- adian Leglon. .M.C.A. War Fund. Save the children Fund. Ambul- ance Fund. Giving Again V-cards. War Saving Certificates. War Ser- Fund. We also sent gifts of cigar- ettes to our servicement.

We donate to the T.B. I382!!!- the Orphanage. Salvation Army- Cancer Fund. Iron Lung Fund. A wheel chair was purchased for a crippled girl in the district.

The Institute sponsored Swim- ming. sewing classes, distribution of Cod Liver Capsules. and a Red Cross First Aid Course.

In February 1943. the members decided to aid In the movement for establishment of a hospital in Eastern Kings. In 1944 a dance and a chicken supper were held for the Hospital. Each year we contribute money. canned fruit and vegetables.

In July 1947. and in June 1949. we entertained the district conven- tion delegates.

We have an adopted Institute in England.

Each year delegates attend the conventions and bring back the news of their trip to other mem- bers. Many helpful hints are pas- sed among the members, recipes are exchanged and new ideal brought in.

Interesting and informative lit- erature aent out from the head office is read and " J the meetings. A pleasant social hour with sandwiches. sweets and the provided by a committee on- pointed to help the hostess brings our meetings to a close.

We hope that we have lived up to our motto - For Home and Country. We should all think ser- iously of the words contained in our Creed and Ode. As a guide to better living they are second only the ten commandments.

Montague Legion Auxiliary Meets

The regular monthly meeting of the Laides Auxiliary of the Can- adian Legion. Montague, was held at the home of Mrs. B.N. Stewart, Tuesday evening with the vice- yresident. Mrs. L.W. Gillis, in the chair.

The meeting opened in the usual manner by observing a one-minute silence. Roll call was answered by 14 members. The minutes of the previous meeting were read by Miss Flurrie Benton and were ap- proved as read. Routine business was transacted. including the re- ports of committees and the read- ing of accounts.
