. The schooner Page, which recently ar- rived at San Francisco, California, from Japan, brought intelligence that the city of Jeddo, in span, was destroyed by an

earthquake on the Ilth of November, I855,

and that one hundred thousand houses

were demolished, and that thirty thousand

human beings were buried beneath the

ruins. Fire broke out at the same time in

thirty different parts of the city. The earth opened, and closed over thousands of buildings with their occupants. The shock was severe at Simoda. Although the distance from Jcddo to Sitnoda is but sixty miles, it appears that no oﬂicial account of the earthquake had been re- ceived at the latter place at the time of the sailing of the schooner Page—December 10th. The news was obtained through the Dutch interpreter. The Japanese seemed to attach but little importance to the catas- trophe. The inhabitants of the poitioii of the city desti-oycd were forewarned of the disaster, and many of them escaped.

The buildings ofJeddo are chiefly of one story, and constructed of very light mate- rial. The temples of worship, however, are lofty, and‘ in some instances are con- structed of heavy inasonr .

According to the best authorities, Jcddo, the capital, had a population of one million. The entire empire of Japan is 600 miles Ion and I00 miles wide, and is composed of islands. The total population is estima- ted at 30,000,000. In the chief island, Niphon, there is said to be one of the rich- est gold mines in the world. There are also terrilic volcanoes; the earthquakes, therefore, are by no means of rare occur- rence. It will be remembered that one took place a short time since, by which a Russian frigate was destroyed.

The destruction, if to the extent report- ed, is almost without a parallel. The city of Catania was destroyed in I693, in a moment, and l8,000 people perished in the ruins. In I755 the greater part ot the city of LISI)ul| was d_estroy_ed,. and nearly 79,000 persons peri.-lmd in six minutes.
