In a message to the Island people on August 8th the Honourable Douglas Harkness, Federal Minister of

Agriculture said, and we quote from the Charlottetown Guardian,

“No other province in Canada is so completely dependent on our primary in-

dustry as Prince Edward Island and none has done so much to utilize its poten-

7 tial as a livelihood for its residents, and _to add lustre to the standards of qual-

ity which give the Canadian product its most competitive element.”

To maintain this excellent record of good administration, the 6 year Matheson Government pledged,

August 17th, to our Island farmers the following program:—

‘@ To establish a Marketing Department, which will include a research and survey department for the purpose of analyzing existing markets, seeking new markets and exploring new marketing techniques. The

information obtained will be freely available to anyone who wishes te eae :

'@ To establish and encourage the Tobacco Growing Industry within Prince Edward Island.

* ‘(@ Te encourage the establishment of plants te manufacture potate granules, potato flakes and other processed potato products. \@ Te extend the weed control policy by providing subsidies for the pur- chase of custom sprayers.

@ To further encourage the young formers of Prince Edward Island by raising the limit to 41 years of age for loans under the Farm Estab- lishment Act. \

@ Te further expand the 4-H Clubs program.

@ Te conduct an information service through newspaper, radio and television to inform a maximum number of farmers throughout the Island of the latest development in farm methods and techniques, and the results of agricultural research.
