Images '88: A focux on Canadian Pride

When a city is selected and granted charter to host an Olympic Games, the country in which that city lies also rejoices in the enthusiasm the games bring.

Calgary is host to the XV Olympic Winter Games in February 1988, yet all Canadians will participate in a touring extraveganza unmatched in recent history.

The running spirit of the Olympic Torch Relay across Canada will bring with it a sense a national unity unsurpassed in spirit and personal pride.

The Gauntlet, the student newspaper of the University of Calgary, in association with The Gem, would like to extend to all Canadian stu- dents the oppurtunity to share in the spirit of the Olympic Torch relay.

Images ’88: A Focus on Canadian Pride allows

you this oppurtunity. For the contest, individu- als may submit either a photo-essay consisting of at least three photos (black and white preferably) and a written essay of between 200—400 words OR an essay of between 1000-1500 words, detailing the significance of the relay to Canadians.

Submissions should be delivered to The Gem office. The Gem will select the ten best entries, publishing whichever one our judges deem best. All ten best submissions will then be forwarded to The Gauntlet who will chose the submissions from each province which best reflect the pride of Canada.

Prizes shall be awarded for the top five sub- missions from each province. The top prize con- sists of a commemorative Torch Relay jacket pro- duced by Sun Ice Canada. Approximate value $190.00.

A complete list of secondary prizes and the complete contest rules and regulations will be available from The Gem office, Rm. 01 Utility building.

All contest entries must be receive by The Gem by December 15th 1987. Entries may also be left at the SU office in the Barn.

Welcome back. It’s been a while since we last spoke to you. A few events have taken place since then. For instance the Frosh reception was held which proved to be a success.

Our annual bowl- ing tournament was recently held on Nov. 19 , it was a smash hit ( just ask Cud- more!), We would also like to recognize those Business stu- dents who made themselves seen all over Charlottetown during the Bio’s Pub Crawl.
