A QUESTION.

We have no disposition to disturb the serenity of Sir Louis Davies’ holiday. Sir Louis ia at home for a rest; let him have ‘t. He will need some reserve force when, in August next, he comes to deal with the lTpited -States Commissioners at Quebec ; and we hope that the bargain to be made will be a good one for Canada. But, perbaps, some of his friends will explain a problem suggested by the following words clipped from the Patriot’s interview with “‘ the knightly-Sir Louis”:

“ True, the total expenditure was large,” proceeded Sir Louis, nd but _every item is capable of defence and justification,

—Sir Louis Davies announces that Mr. Jobn Charlton. M. P., may be one of the Commissioners at the Quebec Conference. Mr. Charlton gave the Washington politi- cians timely advice as to the best means of squeezing the Canadian lumber trade, and he is a New Yorker, born bred and educated. The qnestion is, will his influ- ence on the commission pot inure to the advantage of the United States?

—Mr Sharpe is receiving warm and well deserved praise for improvements in the summer time-table. Strange that when Senator Ferguson was struggling, a few years ago, for the introduction cf the principle of close connection with the mainland, upon which the new timestable is based, those whoare now praising Mr Sharpe were then equally loud in their abuse of the Senator.

—Sir Louis Davies, whatever his faults may be, has still a warm admiration for his native isle. In the course of an inter~ view withthe Patriot heis reported to have said: “Thereis’ nothing half so lovely as the auburn shores and emerald green of Prince Edward Island. I have travelled considerable lately and have seen many beautiful placee, but none equalled in landscape beauty the Island nestling on the -blue waters as viewed from the deck of the Northumberland yesterday,”

OBITUARY.

The relatives, neighbors and friends were gathered together at Brooklyn, Lot 61, on the 22nd inst., to lay to rest the re- mains of Mary, eldest daughter of the late Joseph Compton and beloved wife of Ben~ jawio Bears. Throughout her long avd painful illness she showed that same mild and patient disposition that made her an exemplary wife and mother. She was in the 53rd year of her age, and leavesa husband, seven sons and two daughters,

By skilful manoeuvering Mr. Williams managed to escape without Serious injury to bimeelf, but the bicycle was thrown down on the street and the front wheel ran over by the carriage.
