CURB SPECULATION

Suspension of foreign exchange dealings is intended to prevent speculation in foreign currencies. No official information is being released on the government’s plans but financial quarters and newspapers have discussed vari- ous possibilities.

The new franc, it is forecast, will be made convertible for cer- tain operations in the area of the common market and possibly in dealings with some other coun- tries. ’

A high finance ministry official said the French government re- ceived reports from London that the British government has taken a firm decision to go ahead with convertibility 0f sterling. He did not disclose details of the limits of this convertibility.

The London decision is under- stood here to have influenced greatly France’s projects for eco- nomic and financial reform, which have been under considera- tion for some time.

Holiday Death Count Passes 24 In Canada

Canada’s accidentaldeath count climbed to 24 as the half- way mark was passed in the four- day Christmas holiday period. Only two provinces were fatality— free.

Highway accidents accounted for 17 of the deaths. The other: included fires a nd accidental falls.

A Canadian Press survey, be- ing conducted from noon Wednes- day to midnight Sunday showed that Ontario, with 10 deaths, headed the provincial tolls.

It was followed by Manitoba _5; Quebec, Alberta and Nova Scotia 2 each; British Columbia, New- foundland and New Brunswick, 1 each.

Saskatchewan and Prince Ed- ward Island had clear slates up to Friday afternoon.

The Canadian Highway Safety Conference has forecast 40 road deaths for the period between 4 pm. Wednesday and midnight Sunday and a total of 80 fatalities up to midnight Jan. 1.

Nine Of Family Lose Lives In Dwelling Firo

AUBURN, Wash. (API—A fire that "seemed to explode” from the kitchen of a large rural homo killed nine of the 12 members of a farm family Friday.

The blaze, starting at 6 a.m.. destroyed the Ole Hollenbach home four miles east of this small western Washington town. The description of the fire was given firemen by Hollenbach. one of the three survivors, before he was taken to a hospital for treat- ment ofburns.

Hollenbach, 4c. said he went out the kitchen door to get a fire extinguisher on a porch but was unable to re-enter the house as the kitchen burst into flames which quickly enveloped the rest of the house.

MOTHER OF YEAR

Dead were Mrs. Hollenbach, as. Auburn‘s “mother of the year" in 1957, and eight Hollenbach children: Gale, 18, Donald, 17, Garry. 16, Sharon. 15, Patricia, 13, Mary Allyn, 8, Carl. 6, and Penny, 4.

The two survivors besides Hol- lenbach were another daughter, Wanda. 9, and Mrs. Phoebe High-

tower. 80. M r s. Hollenbach’s mother. Wanda, severely burned,

crawled onto the roof of the two- storey frame house. A neighbor, Willard Clyde. rescued her.

Clyde said the barking of his dog called his attention to the blaze, “The whole house was in flames. and only Hollenbach was outside.”

Hollen‘bach told firemen he be~ lieved the fire started from a short circuit in a cord leading to an electric clock in the kitchen.

Father Is Held In‘ Boy’s Death

CHICAGO (AP) — A coroner's jury ruled Friday that a father who fatally wounded his son while practising a fast pistol draw be bound over to the grand jury on an involuntary man- slaughter charge.

Policemen testified they found about 75 bullet holes in the wood- work and walls of the home of Jack Bender, 29, a furnace in- staller and gun fancier.

Bender‘s 14 - month - old son Wyatt died Christmas Day from a .22-calibre bullet wound in the chest—a victim, authorities said, of his tather's pistol.

Bender is the father of five children. His wife, E be, 29, is expecting another ch' d.

King Frederick Reported ill

COPENHAGEN (AP) — King Frederick of Denmark was put to bed Friday with a minor rupture in one lung caused by a violent coughing spell.

The 59-year-old monarch was stricken at breakfast in his hunt- ing lodge at Trend in northern Jutland Wednesday. He was flown here Friday in an ambu- lance plane.

WASHINGTON AP The Western Big Three have virtually completed drafts of notes to Rus- sia offering to discuss the entire German problem at a new con- ference with the Soviet Union.

The allies will reject any sug- gestion of limiting talks to Ber- lin's future despite Soviet threats to turn their sector over to Com- munist-controlled East Germany in the next five months.

Officials who reported this Fri- day said the Western notes will be delivered within a few days, probably before New Year's Day. The West German government is reported ready to send along its formal reply to the Russian threats about the same time.

Diplomatic informants reported the notes would be parallel but not identical. All four will stand firm, they said, on the Western determination to remain in Ber- lin.

BOSTON (API—District Court Judge Charles E. Wyzanski Jr., Friday denied motions for acquit- tal and a new trial of industrialist Bernard Goldine and his secre- tary who were convicted of con- tempt of court last Monday.

The court also denied a motion for a reduction of sentence.

Goldfine was sentenced to three months and Miss Mildred Paper— man. his secretary, to 10 days. 'llheir sentences are Scheduled to begin Jan. 7. But it is unlikely that they will go to jail then. They are appealing to the U.s. Court of Appeals.
