Dulcie and Doge.
Dalcin, or sucrol, a new sweetening agent, which is said to be from 200 to 25) times as sweet as suger, was first produce: by J. Berlinerblat. Stracturally it mut be described as para-pneuacetol carbamiii. It is an aromatic uric acid derivative relat ed to phenacetin. It is a white powder which melts at 173 degrees C. to 174 de- grees C., and is soluble in about 800 part. of waterat 15 degrees C., fifty paris o: boiling water, and twenty-five parts of » cold 90 per cent. solution of alcohol. These particulars are taken from a contribution by Professor Kobert, of Dorpat, to th Centralblatt fur Innere Medicin, Particu- lirs as to its physiological effects are als given. Dogs seems comparatively senseless to Dulein, dving with euch evidences uf blood destruction as icterusa, while rabbit appear tv be quite impervious to ite influ ence. Professor Kobert relates his own experience with the drug in the case vi cata. These animals reveal no evidence ut blood destruction, but seem to die with symptoms of cerebral paralysis; this is also the manner of death of frogs subject- ed to subcutaneous injections of dulcin. These ae, of course, the extreme effects of poisonous doses. In the relatively smai! doses necessary for sweetening the food of biabetic patients and the obese, Professu: Kobert considers the agent harmless, and mentions a case in which eight grammes were taken daily for three weeke with im- punity. The Lancet says it is quite evi dent, however, from the physiological ¢x- periences related that care is necessary in the use of this article.

After the thirteenth Vandemaire, when Napoleon Bonaparte was really in the posi tion of dictator of Paris, he had to contend against a famine that made public distribu- tion of bread necessary. Naturally the scarcity of food was liable to become a serious element in the politics of the time. It was essential to look carefully to the state of feeling in the mob, which had so often proved itself capable of overthrow ing an administration. Napoleon was walking along the street with a pair of his staff one morning after the distribution of bread had been insufficient, and tumultu- ous scenes were occurring in front of the doors of the bakers. As the officers passed the crowd jeered at them. One woman, monstrously big and fat, made herself con- spicnous by wild gesticulation. ‘All that crowd of epaulet wearers are making a laughing stock of us!’ she exclaimed bitterly. “If they can eat and grow fat it’s all the same to them if poor people are starving.”
Napoleon stopped and interrupted her. “My good woman,” he said, “look me over carefully and tell me which of us two is the fatter just now.”
Napoleon at that time was as thin as a rail. He says himself: “I waslikea sheet of parchment.” The crowd took in the situation at once and broke into laughter and cheers. The story was told all over Paris, and had a very appreciable influence in calming the irritation of the populace.
Early in April, 1797, the people of Aus- tria demanded peace with France. Nego- tiations were begun in the vicinity of Leo- ben. Bonaparte, in an interview with the Austrian plenipotentiaries, said to them: “Your government has sent against me four armies without generals and this time a general without an army.” In the treaty which the Austrian commissioners projected the first article stipulated that the Emperor of Austria thereby recognized the French republic. “Erase it!’ exclaim ed Napoleon. “The existence of the re public is as plain as the sun. This ar ticle is only fit for the blind. We are our own masters, and shall establish any gov- ernment we prefer. If one day the French people,’ he continued, ‘should wish to create a monarchy, the emperor might object that he had recognized a republic.” The preliminaries were soon settled, Na poleon signing for Franee, thus placing himself on an equal footing with the em
peror of Austria. The formal treagy known as Campo Formio was signed in October, 1797, Austria fulfilling th: pledges she had already given. The Aus-
trian plenipotentiary protested against the distribution of the provinces beyond the Adige. Napoleon was angered at this, and seizing a vase dashed it to the ground, exclaiming: “If it is not so arranged Iwill break your monarchy as I have broken this vase!” This argument of force, as de monstrated to the diplomat, was convinc- ing, and the treaty was signed.
In the early days of the century 8. P. Wilder, a prominent Boston business man, established himself comfortably in Paris. Through his business, political, and reli- gious relations, he was soon widely known and his house became a rendezvous for such men as Baron de Stael and Lafayette. Talleyrand, too, was an occasional comer. He was in Paris during all the vicissitudes of the empire. He saw the emperor’s sun rise at Austerlitz and set at Waterloo. On the dissolution of the empire his personal knowledge of Napoleon and his observa tions of the material prosperity of the land led him to take a lively interest in the fate ofthe unthroned monarch and propose plans for his escape.
Meanwhile, on an occasional trip to this country, Mr. Wilder had married and pur- chased an ideal pastoral home in Bolton village, thirty miles west of Boston.
Here it was Mr. Wilder offered the fugitive Napoleon a home. Strange re version of circumstances! It was but five short years before that Mr. Wilder had re- presented our government at the emper- or’s marriage with Maria Louisa, the em- peror’s guest at the Tuileries.
In July of that tremendous year, 1815, Mr. Wilder had merchant vessels lying off the French coast. Napoleon had abdicat- ed and was at Malmaison, considering what yet might be done. Nothing could be done. He determined to leave the France “he had loved so well.”” He would fly to the United States. Various schemes were suggested, most of which are record- ed in history; and history tells us they fail- ed because it was deemed impossible to elude the British cruisers.
Mr. Wilder, however, conceived that he, well known and respected as an American merchant, and controlling the ships laden under his direction, could avoid this diffi- culty. He communicated his plans to the emperor. The emperor was to be con- ducted to the coast disguised as Mr. Wil- der’s valet. for whom Mr. Wilder had al ready a passport. Arrived at the coast the gentleman and his valet would embark on an American merchantman. This ship was to be supplied with a huge cask, placed se as to be plainly visible from thi deck. This cask was to have false corm partments near the end, from which water was constantly to drip. Napoleon was to be smuggled under this and to stay thers till the vessel stood well out to sea beyond the reach of the Enlish-men-of war

the antique porticos and embowered lanes, exclaiming (we presume): “Vanity of vanities! Allis vanity, saith the preach
er.” But it remained for other hills to echo that voice.
This plan Napoleon seriously considered and declared it feasible, but finally de clined, saying he would his faithful friends who had clung to him through prosperity and adversity.

Dr. A. Haig, writing on an epidemic of suicide, is of opinion that such cases of sel f- destruction, occurring in seasonal waves as it were, are to be expiained in the theory of mental depression affecting the func tions of the kidneys, and tending towards an excess of uric acid in the blood. This causes high tension in the brain-circulation with consequent mental instability, lead ing to self-destguction. Curiously enough, between 6 a. m. and noon is the period when suicide most frequently occurs; then also that most uric acid is passing through the blood. These observarions, which Dr. Haig is going to publish in full show once again how inter-dependent are the mental and physical sides of our mani- fold nature,
