BOSTON. April 18 - (AP) - Startling descriptions of secret workouts have made Kun Chil Choi of Seoul. Korea. the top- favorite in tomorrow's Boston A. A. Marathon field and and also a threat to break the 26-mile-385- yard course record of two hours, 25 minutes. 39 seconds set by his countryman, Yun Bok Suh, in 1947.

Choi and two other Koreans. Kii Yoon Song and Kee Yong Ham. will be in the starting field of 167 in Little I-Iopkinton at noon.

With Summer just around the

corner. it shouldn't be long be- fore the various Clubs and organ- izations will be getting their heads together to lay their plans for the forthcoming local baseball season and decide what leagues will oper- ate this season and the teams that will comprise those leagues. It will be some time yet before so- tual play will begin, but there in much to do in the meantime. In fact, it is not the start of play that is the big problem, but the spade work that has to be done before- hand. . . .

As soon as the ground is dry enough. ball diamonds will have to be spruced up and put in shape for play, teams and leagues will have to be organized and develop- ed. and all the other minor details that have to be attended to in the interest of well-organized sport that is necessary to promote a full season of keen competitive play and sporting entertainment successfully. Now is the time to lay such plans and work out the details. and from what we hear, local officials are already sound- ing out the situation and clearing the decks for action.

According to its director, Briga- dier W. W. Reid. the Department of Physical Fitness is planning another bumper year in the way of baseball. softball and other activities, and although experi- encing a highly successful season last year. are hoping for an even bigger and better program for the forthcoming Summer.

As last year. the Department plans to sponsor Bantam. Midget. Junior, Intermediate "B". Inter- mediate ”A" ball leagues, as well as ladies' and men's softball in which City and Island. champions will be declared in each division. In addition, they are planning on developing both baseball and soil- ball in the interscholastic bcys' and girls' divisions which will also take in City and Provincial play.

In a brief interview with Briga- died Reid yesterday. he intimated that the Department would en- deavour to devote more time this year to the development of base- ball and softball in the rural centres. He expressed the hope that where the Miidget. Bantam and Interscholastic groups are concerned. that many of the small- er centres might be encouraged to take part in the various competit- ions both in their own districts and in Provincial play. instead of just the usual competitions be- tween Summers!-'e and Charlotte-

In fact, with the experi- ence gained from operating to the satisfaction of all concerned lut year. there is certainly no reason why this year's program shouldn't be even "bigger and better than

Director Reid also stated that the annual six-mile run and ten- mlle Interscholastic bicycle race will be held again this year on the 24th of May. and that although these events have not been draw- ing very big entry lists during the past couple of years. it is hoped that a greater interest will be in evidence this year.

April 18 - (CP) - New York Rangers. an underdog hockey team that won't stay lick- ed. overcame a two-goal deficit in the third period tonight and kept going in overtime to shade De- troit Red Wings 4-! in the fourth game of the Stanley Cup finals. A 15-foot backhand shot fired by Don Raleigh as he fell to the ice ended the game after 8 1-2 min- utes of sudden-death play. The goal stunned 13.557 fans who had established Red Wings as pro- hibitive favorites to lake the

The Ranger victory squared the best-of-seven playoffs at two games apiece and continued the in-and-out pattern of the first three games of the National Hoc- key League playoffs in which the Rangers. fourth-place finishers in the regular season, have looked alternately good and bad against the N. H. L. champions.

The Red Wings their way to an easy victory in the first period as goals by Ted Lindsay and Sid Abel gave them a comfortable margin. For Lind- say, N. H. L. scoring leader. it was the first goal in 11 playoff games.

Rangers fought back as centre Buddy O'Connor scored with a second left to play in the second period. But hard-trying Marty Pavelich banged home a third De- troit tally early in the final frame, seconds after New York goalie Chuck Rayner had robbed him with a brilliant save.

Five minutes later. Edgar La- prade sank a long 30-footer and Rangers started a drive for the tying goal. Goaltender Harry Lumley held them off 1,111 the 16:26 mark. when rugged Gus Kyle bulled his way through to bang Alex Ka1eia's pass by a protesting Lumley. who claimed the Ranger defenceman had interfered with him on the play.

The break in the torrid overtime period came when New York's Ed Slowlnski stole the puck from Joe Carveth behind the Detroit net and whipped it out to Raleigh. off balance. the Ranger centre barely managed to get his shot away be- fore falling.

The teams meet again Thursday night with the sixth game schedul- ed for Saturday. A seventh game. if necessary. will be played Sunday night. All remaining play will be on Detroit ice as Rangers were d'- possessed by a circus from their home rink at Madison Square Gar- den early in the series.

Canadian Legion Wins DarL Series

In a series of friendly same! played between Sandy's of Marsh- field and the Charlottetown Canad- ian Legion during the past few weeks, has resulted in a win for the Canadian Legion by two games to one.

An elimination tournament is now being played for the Canadian legion Trophy. comprised of the following teams:- Sandy's, Dirty Eight, and the Canadian Leg- ion. The first match between san- dy's and the Legion, reaulted in a win for the Legion by three games to one.

There is I good chance that a boat could make from Charlotte- town to Pictou stated Chief Of- ficer Angus Brown as he report- ed that Charlottetown Harbour was open and Piciou Harbour was relaxing yesterday. Summerside Harbour is open and in better condition than Charlottetown.

After completing another aerial ice survey for the Department of Transport. Chief Officer Brown reported that little ice had moved out during the ..past several days due to the lack of wind. The pack in the Gulf has shifted about two miles northward.

The steamer track has also shift- ed two miles north. Chief Officer Brown spotted seven ships passing through the track yesterday morn- ing and none of them appeared to be having any difficulties.

Bad ice conditions exist in the eastern end of the Northumbei'- land Slraii. Canso Strait is full of drill ice but the ice is slow- ly emptying out of George Bay.

The semi-ice breaker Edward Cornwallis is heading towards Sydney Harbour escorting two

mall craft that were stuck near Louis-burg yesterday. One of the craft appears to have a disabled shaft and ii is believed that the ice breaker has a line on her. The other boat is following in the track of the Edward Cornwallis. Meanwhile a third boat is still stuck a good distance north of Loulsburg.
