COMING EVENTS

APRIL MEETING. On Tuesday, April 5th, Dr. Lawson Drake, an entomologist with the Dept. of Biology at U.P.E.I. will speak on the moths of the Island. This should

be a most interesting follow-up to his talk on Island butterflies given last spring, and will be a great way to start the spring insect season! Dr. Drake has once again promised as a special treat a selection of his best 'bad insect-peotry'.

MAY MEETING. The May 3rd meeting will feature a showing of the entries in the annual nature slide competition. Winners will be announced and prizes will be awarded. Since this will be the last meeting of the season, let's all make a special effort to be present.

FILM NIGHT. To mark Environment Week the NHS will be hosting its annual evening of nature films for the whole family. Watch your newspaper in mid May for details of time, date and location.

PROVINCIAL SCIENCE FAIR AT U.P.E.I. Reserve Friday April 8th to attend the annual nign school Science Fair at U.P.E.I. Entries will include projects on natural history and environmental themes, for which the Natural History Society will be donating prizes. Show your support for our young people by your attendance.

CANADIAN WILDLIFE FEDERATION. The national conference of the CWF will be held in Charlottetown in late May. Members of the Natural History Society have been invited to attend.

BIRD COURSE AT U.P.E.I. Geoff Hogan will be giving a 6 week course in Island Bird Life in spring. The course will begin in May and run through June. Contact the Extension Department at U.P.E.I. for more information.

FIELD TRIPS

CAPE TRYON. The annual excursion to the cormorant nesting cliffs is scheduled for Sat. April 16th. Meet at the YMCA in Charlottetown at 9:00 a.m. for trans- portation or at Cape Tryon at 10:00 a.m. The day will also include a visit to the Indian River wildlife area to look for returning waterfowl. Dress warmly, bring a lunch, binoculars and waterproof boots (the road may be too muddy to drive). Contact Geoff Hogan for more information.

AMPHIBIAN PROWL. On the first mild rainy evening of late April plan to join in

the annual amphibian hunt. Under such conditions frogs, toads and salamanders will

be emerging from winter hibernation and slithering their ways through fields, ditches and roads to their breeding ponds. Dress warmly, bring flashlights, rain gear,

high boots or waders, field guides, dip nets, etc. Sign up with Geoff Hogan.

UP WEST TO TYNE VALLEY. This day-long spring field trip will leave the YMCA in Charlottetown to travel to the Tyne Valley area. Watch the May-June newsletter for final details.

SPRING MUSHROOM WALKS. Anyone interested in participating in informal mushroom walks this spring should sign up with Katherine Clough at 894-8390.
