On December 22, two families named Silva and Gonzalez left Talihuano in boat, for the purpose of attending the Christmas procession, and of taking part in the festival of Our Lady of Carmel Upon their return voy- axe, it became necessary to alter the position of the sails and all the passevg- ers rushed to one side of the boat, which was capsized and all the occupants were thrown into the woter. ‘The cries of the drowning people were heard by two lightermen, who picked up tive persons, one of whom appeared quite dead, and as the boat was unable to stand such weight it was resolved to throw the supposed dead man over. This was done, but the man no sooner touched the water (han he seized hold of the gun- wale of the boat and capsized it. The recently rescued people of the lightermen were thrown into the sea; and out of seven persons five were drowned. In all sixteen people found a watery grave.
