A Picroystan Mourperep.—Alex. McKim- mie, of Riversdale, Pictou, N. S., has been murdered in Momson, Maine, for his money. His body was found on Wednesday last. A man named Hall is suspected of the crime.

Pick-Pockets.—The attention of the proper authorities is directed to a gang of juvenile pick-pockets who ply their calling on market days. Yesterday a poor country-woman was robbed, by one of this gang, of a a purse con- taining over three dollars.

Destrorvep By Fire.—The Dorchester (N. B.) barque Bertha Anderson has been destroy- ed by fire, together with a portion of her in- ward cargo. The vesse] was owned by Wm. Hickman and was insured for $5,200. The freight was insured for $1,500.

Countrrretr.—Counterfeit Dominion of Canada, $2 notes are in circulation in the city. Several of them have recently been de- tected at the Banks. The difference between the genuine note and the couterfeit is so small that it is very difficult to distinguish.

Saviyes Bank Returns.—The returns of the Moncton agency of the Gcevernment Sav- ings Bank show deposits in June amounting to $4,500 and withdrawals of $9,500. In many cases withdrawals are made for invest- ment in real estate. The total amount to the eredit of depositors at the end of June was $299,428. ~Times.

Cricket.—The Canadian cricketers follow- ed their innings in the international match, on the Sth. All were retired for 39 runs, leaving the Americans victorious by an inning and 87 runs. Jones of St. John made 6, which, with Brewster's 6, were the highest made on the Canadian side. Henry, of Hali- fax, got out for a cipher.

——— ~<a “= Tea Party.—The Tea Party at Dundas, on the 5th inst., was a mnst enjoyable one. A large number of persons were present, and all seemed to enjoy themselves to their hearts’ content. Thecake and fancy articles were auctioned off by Mr. H. L. McDonald, Esq., the popular repretentative of the District. About $300, in all, were realized.

Fatt or AN Exvecrric Bort.—A Point du Chene correspondent of the Moncton Times writes; A heavy thunder and lightning storm passed over here this (Thursday) afternoon. A thunder bolt fell and made a hole about five feet from the corner of U. Z. Keith's store and dwelling. The hole was qbout five inches wide ; it cannot be ascertained how deep.

Founv 1s A Ctam.—The Moncton Transcript reports that Dr‘ver N. McLean, of the I. C. R., while taking a stroll through the woods near the upper part of Robinson’s Creek, discovered a fresh water clam in the bed of the stream, and on opening it was surprised to find a pearl, about the size of a large pea, egg shaped and of a pinkish hue. Lhe pearl is evidently of considerable value.

Pvetist.—Jack Metsee, of East Boston, and Jem Kendrick, who signs himself mid- dle-weight champion of England, have been matched in a contest of 15 rounds with two ounce gloves, according to the Mar- quis of Queensbury rules for endurance, within three weeks in Boston, for a parse of not less than $500, of which 70 per cent. shall go to the winner and 30 per cent. to the loser.

A Narrow Escare.—On Tuesday last a two-year-old girl, daughter of Mr. John Par- lee, Perth, Near Grand. Falls, while playing with some children on the track of the N. B. railway, was struck bya flat car, thrown down and passed over by the train, but as she fortunately lay between the rails, was not crushed. The child, however, received such Sewy blow as will probably prove fatal.—

——@———= Lauxcnep.—On the 4th, at Souris West, was launched atwo-topmast schooner, of 99 tons measurement, called the Nutwood, after the celebrated trotting stallion of that name. This vessel is intended for mackerel seining. and is equipped for the business in every par- ticular. No expense has been spared in build- ing her by her owners, Messrs. Matthew, Me- Lean & Co,; and she is pronounced to be one of the thandsomest and best constructed vessels ever built in the ( ‘ounty. The foreman, Capt. Lord, deserves credit for the work done. r. James Keefe, of Rollo Bay, was the con- tractor, ani although he has built many fine ore in his time, this one is said to be the Sttiest of them all. Judging by her @ r- fice, she is likely to male z meant inene €r competitors as famous as wae that of her Dainesake among his.

The net debt of Canada at the 30th June was $227,242,000, being a decrease of three quarters of a million during the ‘past month. :

The revenue, according to the statements received to June 30th, was $35,000,000 and the expenditure nearly $32,000,000, show- ing a surplus of $3,000,000.

Matrimonial Complications.

Montreal, July 6.

An interesting case has just been decided by Archbishop Fabre and will probably come up for sanction before the civil courts at an early date. In 1864 one Adelaide Masse was married in Quebec to P. E. Labbe and in 1876 she again married to H. P. Labelle, of this city,the first husband be- ing supposed to be dead. The Archbishop having obtained sufficient proof that Labbe

was living at the time of the second marriage, has annulled the latter, and Labelle is now a free man_ before his

Church ; but his position has still to be legalized by the Court and a regular action must be instituted to obtain this.

Counterfeiter Arrested.

Toronto, July 6.

Charles Johnston, the last of the gang of counterfeiters, who had been sending out counterfeit $5 bills of the Bank of British North America, $2 Dominion bills, and $5 American silver certificates, was arrested here to-night, after he had been hunted through Michigan. The officers, however, failed to get counterfeit plates. He was taken to Sarnia to-night. His two confed- erates, Vance and Knight, were arrested here two or three months ago.

Severely Punished.

Montreal, July 6.

Judgment was given to-day in the case of the Cote St. Louis quarrymen who took possession of the polling booth and prevent- ed the public from voting for the water- works system. The three worst, F. Beaudry, E. Pierrault and M. O’Brien, were sent to jail for six months. Beaudry was fined $50 or another six months, having brutally struck a constable when he was down. Four others received light sentences and One was acquitted.

AMHERST, July 6. There was a large gathering to-day at the nomination proceedings. A. R. Dickey, Conservative, and C. R. Casey, Prohibi- tionist, were nominated.

Personal. Mr. Edward Hackett, Assistant Inspector of Fisheries, visited this week, the lobster canneries in King’s County. Several of these establishments have already been closed by their proprietors, owing to the scarcity of lobsters.

J. H. Crosby, wife and child J. H. D. Fraser, wife and child, and Mrs. Stocker, who have been away in Denver for the last nine years, are paying a visit to their Island home. Mr. Fraser, has been very successful abroad, and is now one of the largest building contractors in Denver. He is a brother of Mr. F. Fraser, of Linwood Road, Lot 31.

There may be some thing in the peaceful, ness of the House of Lords which is conduct- ive to longevity, and itis not surprising to learn that the number of peers who have at- tained four score years will be increased by six this year, making a total of 39 peers who have passed the allotted span by ten years. In the House of Commons, on the other hand, there are only two M. P.’s over 89, for Mr. Gladstone will not be thatold till next year, and Mr. Bright is two years younger. A list of notable people who complete their eightieth in 1888 includes Bishop Oxenden, Cardinal Manning, Marshal MacMahon, and Jefferson D avis.
