GENERAL FRENCH.

Julian Ralph says that though Gen- eral Kitchener is not second to Lord Roberts in success in this war, there is a general who must soon receive at heme the credit and the plaudits which he has gained from the army. His name is French— Major General J. D. P. French. ;

As to his personality, the phrase the square little general” would serve to describe him in any army circles without a mention of his name. He has the shape of a brick as well as the best characterisiics of one. He is a short, thick junk of a man, who always stands with his feet and legs well apart, and sits upon _ his saddle likea Red Indian squaw. Aview of his back suggests the thick-set, neckless shape of General Grant, and I suspect there is a great deal of Grant’s dogged- nessin him. Like Grant, too, he shows no concern for cxternals.

He is quiet, undemonstrative, easy and gentle. When you are with his command you don’t notice him, you don’t think of him—unless you are a soldier, and then you are glad you are there. Heis perfectly accessible to any one, but speaks very little when addressed. He must be a fine judge of men, for he hasa splendid staff around him—splendid inthe sense that they are soldierly like himself and all active and useful. Judging from the way his men live in the country when they a'e swarming over it, he must be easy, as true soldiers are in those situations, though the discipline of the rank and file is excellent. You do no notice his dress, but if you should it would be seen to be mote serviceable than smart.

When we went over to Thaba N’Chu from Bloemfontein on a bill- steeking expedition (as the destribution of Lord Roberts’ proclamation was called) he showed by his treatment of the Boers that he hada very kindly mature. He stopped at night in the Boer houses, and got on very well with the families, with all of whose members h€ shook hands, while saying pleasant things to them.

That Britain’s patricians are of the right stock is shown by the fact that 36 members of the House of Lords are with the troops in South Africa, Be- sides these 36, there are hundreds of the brothers and younger sons of peers serving with their regiments.

THE HORSE IN BATTLE.

When it comes toa battle a horse shows no fear of death, no sign of be- ing overcome by panic inall the wild tumult of the battle’s roar. <A _ hurse in one of Our batteries in the Murfree- boro fight was hit by a piece ot shell, which split his skuil so tha: one side was loosened. Thedriver turned him loose, but when he saw the team had worked with being driven back for ammunition he ran to his old place and galloped back with the rest. When an officer pushed him aside to have another horse put in he gazed at the new one with a most sorrowful ex- pression in his eyes. Then he seemed to realize thatthe battle was no more for him, and he walked away ard lay down and died. ‘The officer declared that is was a broken heart that killed him,

can tell you that those which are the most sensational are likewise most un- ture. ‘Fhe man in the street appar- ently has almost burst up with curios- ity because Lord Kitchener’s name is not mentioned as_ leading at the front.

You have heard the story terrible row between the Field Marshal and his chief of staff. You have been told with a certain air of circumstanti- ality how Lord Roberts was within an inch of sending Lord Kitchener home.

All rubbish!

The truth is simply this: “Bobs” is perfectly aware, as is everyone else, that Lord Kitchener’s forte is crganiza- tion.

So Lord Kitchener has been detail- ed upon that most trying of jobs, the organizing for alarge army under difficult circumstances.

What is mere, he has done the work assigned to him in a way which hasen- abled “Bobs” to go ahead at a pace which has astonished and stampde the Boers.

When the history of the war comes tobe written, if the truith be told it will be that Kitchener’s victories of organ- zation were the means of Roberts vic- tories of action.
