Crime iN Frepericron,—In Fredericton fur the month ending June 3 last year, there were 23 arrests for drunkeness; fiveassaults two cases of malicious injury to property and one indecent assauit—all caused by liquor. Between the same dates this year there have beer eight arrests for drunken- ness, one case of cruelty to animals and three assaults from the same cayse.

They found that Squire Sterling was at Elizabeth, O., just 200 yardsover the state line. As they reached the squire, the girl’s father could be seen in the distance pursuing on horse- back. Hawirax, June 6.

Rev. Father Guilla, who arrived from St. John’s, N. F., this morning, said that the fishermen at Sandy Point, St. George’s Bay, are very much excited over the way in which they have been treated by the French. A day before the steamer Caspian sailed, the schooner Rover, Capt. Graham, while fishing off St. George’s Bay, wag hailed by a boat from a French man-of-war and ordered to take in her nets. The cap-

sin of the Rover refused, and the French ieliberately pulled the fishing gear from the water. Rev. Father Howley interviewed the commander of the French vessel and got aim to refrain from further action uwatil the arrivai of the St. John’s delegates, who sre now on the other side trying to effect a settlement of the question. A number of fishermen had a meeting at St. George’s mm Friday night at which resolutions were pasged to the effect that if the French came inside the shore limits and floated their nets they would be fired on. In the Commons yesterday the bill for the construction of a tunnel under the British Channel, from England to France, was rejected by a vute of 234 to 153.

In committee on the Tithes’ Bill a pro- posal for the equitable revision of tithes in accordance with the altered conditions of husbandry, was rejected, after the enforce- ment of the cloture Rule, by a vote to 240 to, 197.

Mr. Goschen announced that he would proceed with the Land Purchase Bill on Monday.

The debt of Canada decreased $175,009 during last month. The revenue for the eleven months just ended shows ap increage of $150,000 as compared with the same period af the last fiscal year, and the ex- penditure a decrease of nearly a million. The surplus on June Ist was over seven millions.

Toronto, June 6. The election returns show Mowat’s majority to be at least-20, and “may ‘reach 24. lt was a gfeat victory for the litile Premier as against the Protestant cry rais- ed by the Empire and the Meredith party, So say Mowat’s supporters.
