from an officer in H. M. S. Flying Fish

giving an account of the hoisting of the flag on the latest British

possession, will be interesting to many of our readers :-—

“We returned to Manilla for coals, ete., about April 2, and found two urgent telegrams from the Comman- der-in-Chief ordering us up to Hong Kong at fullspeed. The only incident worth mentioning on the passage up,

was sighting a Russian ironclad (the Minin) just outside Hong Kong. The

captain sent for the first lieutenant and ordered him to clear for aciion, re marking. ‘It’s most unfortunate but we must take a running fight of it.’ Yoa can imagine the 64-pounders (two in pumber) being loaded, hen-coops,ete., shoved out of the way, and the pcor old fish trying to imagine herself a fighting ship. However, we were not molested, but got to our journey’s end in peace and safety. On arrival at Hoag Kong, we found things hdd sim- mered down a bit ; however, inea day or two afresh scare took place, and we got telegraphic orders from the Commander-in-Chiet to hoist out chart- honse, cook-house, steam-house, ete., and replace two 7-inch guns, which we accordingly did, working day and night and making Jif unbearable. As soon as the job was over and we expected to geta rubof paint and settle down as part of the Houg Kong defence, we suddenly got orders to be ready for sea the next day. They filled us up telow and on deck with mines, electric cables, and torpedo stores. During our refit Rooper and Lyne had gone through a ten days’ Whitebead course, fondly im- agining that they would have charge of some of the torpedo boats in case of war, Dut they were sent off all the same. The ship was provided with a tender in the shape of a big steam-launch, purchased from the Hong Kong Gor- ernment. Of course our orders were sealed, but it was an open secret that we were bound for port Hamilton, which we eventually fetched, having only encountered one gale of wind in route, which campetied us to run inshore to rescue our tender. At Port Uamilton we found four or five small craft and a lot of timber sent over from Navasaki for the defence of the port The flagship was at Nagasaki, so we fouud ourselves senior Officer, and at once set to work tolay down the mines and build the booms wherewith to block the smaller entrance. | was told off with the captain of the Merline and an exgunner to fit and lay the mines; and thanks to the first-rate.
