Dec. i1—(CP>-—'I'he New Year will find Canada dis- solving the most powerful armed strength in her history and build- ing a new compact organization on an interim nucleus after d year that brought the end of the W-ll‘ and saw important changes ' in

Canada's permanent armed for- ces organization will be more than five times bigger and relatively more efficiently-equipped forcom- bat than the pre-war force.

The permanent forces are to have a strength of about 50.090 men, compared with p pre-war strength of 10.800 and indications are that the reserve set-up will be substantially stronger than that in August. 1089. '

Here is the picture:-

Navy-Not less than 10,000 men manning two cruisers, two uir- l-rzift carriers, a dozen destroyers and ancillary craft. Behind this \vill be a reserve of 18,000.

Army—Between 20,000 and 25.- 000 men backed by- . reserve of six divisions whose numerical strength is not given. The Canad- lan Army Active Force will con- sist of a brigade group of atleast three infantry divisions, two armored regiments, an artillery formation and ancillary troops- ready to fight as a complete unit.-

R. . A. F.—Betvveen 16.000and 20.000 men for 10 squadrons, The squadrons will consist of four bomber, three fighter, two trans- port and one reconnaissance. Thzerc also will be a reserve of unspeci- fied strength modelled along the lines of thegreserve army.

Interim two-year volunteer for- ces have been set up to tide over the military machinery until the active forces are established. Men. accepted in the interim forces have been assured they ‘will be taken on the permanent strength and have up to March 31 to make up their minds.

Meantime repatriation, de- mobilization and rehabilitation of the peak strength of 781.000 men and women is going on, with nearly 183.000 men brought home from VE-Day, May B, to Nov. 20 and the target ls to have all per- sonnel in northwest Europe with exception of occupation and ad- ministration men, homo by April 2

In Canada demobilization con- tinued at a rate of 65.000 I month and it is assumed that the last discharge will take place shortly after the last repatriste arrives home.

The general plan of rehabilitat- ion laid down by the government has untangled most of its knots, the veteran entering civilian life with mustering out benefits. guarded health and professional and vocational training.

The year also saw Gen. Mc- Naughton, the former commander in the field, go clown to defeat at the polls and be succeeded as De- _fancs Minister by a First Great "xilar gunner-Hon. Douglas Ab- ott.

Other service highlights were the resignation of Gen. Crerar from the command of the 1st Army after it disbanded at the cnd of hostilities: the appoint- ment of Mai-Gen. Charles Foulkes. former overseas commander. to the post of chief of the general staff; the resignation of Rear Ad- miral L. W. Murray as chief of tho Northwest Atlantic, after criticism was leveled at him fol- lowing VE-Day riots in Halifax: and the abandonment of the preparations to send navy, army and air force contingcnts to the Pacific.

Servicewonen Need Stocking Priority .

REGINA, Dec. 11-(0 Pi-Dls- charged service-women, happy over the courses they can take and the gratuities they receive. have one complaint—no stockings.

Some in Regina expressed tho view the clothing priority slip they received on discharge should include priority on at least one pair of silk stockings as well as the one tailored suit .to which it entitled them.

One of them put it this way: "Give me my gratuities and l psi: of nylons and I'd be ln heav- an.

Four women's hosiery depart- ment: explained to a reporter they did not recognize priority slips in the purchase of silk stockings.

Discharged servicewomen. sold clerks, took their chances with others whenever stockings were on sale. One servlcewoman said she found being ln uniform jeopardized her chances of buying stockings. Some shops felt women in uniform didn't need silk hose.

Servicewomen, who were mov- 0d from place to place, had no chance to become “favored cris- tomers" in shops where patrons of long standing were catered to. Though they were allowed to wear silk stockings in off-duty hours and during summer, many serviccwomen did not buy stock- inss and so had no reserve stock on which to fall back.

MOUNTAlN-NEILL WEDDING

A quiet and pretty wedding took

place at the United Parsonage in Surnmerslde on Wednesday, No- vember 'lth., at 8 . m., when Rev- erend K. G. Sulivan united in marriage Elizabeth Jean, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John E. Moun- tain, of Alma, and Preston A. W. Neill, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Neill, of North Milton. The bride was prettily attired in a queen's blue street-length dress with lace trimmings and black accessories. Her corsage was of pink cornu- tions. She was attended by her sister, Muriel, who was dressed in rose with brown accessories and her corsage was of yellow chry- santhemums. The only ornament worn by the bride was a strand of pearls, the gift of the bridegroom. To the bridesmaid he gave gold earrings; to the groomsman he gave a silk scarf. The bridegroom was supported by his cousin, Hom- e1‘ Ne . After the ceremony the bridal party motored to Charlottetown where supper was served at the Charlottetown Hotel. The follow- ing day the happy young couple left by bus on a honeymoon trip to Maine. Boston, Worcester and other points of interest in Massa- chusetts. The bride has been a valued employee of RT. Holman. Summerslde, for the post two years and has made many friends. Prior to her marrlace she was tendered a shower by her girl friends in Suvnmcrsidc at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Byron Thompson, Fitz- roy Street. The living room wgs decorated in blue and white with large White wedding bells. She was escorted to a gally decorated chair by little Roger Heath. The presents were then opened by Viola McNelll and the verses read by Imelda Mchellan and laced on the table by Illda McNe ll. while the bride-to-be. taken very much by surprise. rose and thanked all for‘ their kindness. Many lovely gifts were received, showing the esteem ln which she was held by her Summerside friends. After singing "For She's A Jolly Good Fellow" and showering her with confetti which war concealed in I largo bell hanging up over her head, refreshments were served and the evening spent in social in- tercourse. When the time come for departing all wished many years of happy wedded bliss. The happy couple will reside in North Milton when the bridegroom ll o prosperous farmer.
