To His Excellency, the Governor General in Council, — May it please Vour Excellency :

The memorial of the undersigned inhabitants of Prince Edward lIs- land hereby sheweth :

That the life and prosperity of a province is largely dependent upon its system of communication with the outside world :

That ‘‘continuous communica- tion’” was a principal condition of Prince Edward Island entering into the Canadian confederation at all :

That great loss and inconvenience have resulted to us as a province because of such communication not having been kept up, as a conse- quence of our not having united long ago on the shortest, easiest and most continuous way of such communication.

That distance in the matter of a winter route is, other things equal a prime factor in its adoption to the public service ; and that the route between the Capes—Tormentine and Traverse—offers immeasurably these shortest, and we believe all things considered, the most regular and expeditious way as that which

we are forced to have recourse to in extremity for mails and passengers, even with open boats.

Therefore consonantly to a reso- lution passed at a mass meeting held at Emerald on the sth day of February last, which reads as fol- lows :

‘“‘Resolved that this mass meeting of Islanders do hereby urge upon the Government as of absolute and pressing necessity the imimediate construction of a pier at or near Carleton Head, on this side of the strait ; and further.’’

‘‘Resolved that the Department in charge be requested to push to its completion at once'the necessary dredging at the Tormentine pie for the safe docking of steamers and also to proceed with the con- struction of such other works as may be essential to the safe, speedy and efficient navigation sf the Strait between the capes—its natural fer- ry—winter and summer.”?

We respectfully ask that a sum sufficient be placed in the estimates at the next session of Parliament to secure to us these necessary works and give Prince Edward Island that communication it has a right to under the terms of Confedera- tion.

And your memorialists will ever pray.

D’après le Catholic Directory de! chiffres ci-dessus, au sujet de la po-

l’année 1903, il y a aux Etats-Unis 11, 289,710 personnes appartenant à la religion catholique, soit un sep- tième de la population.

Si on ajoute à ce nombre celui des catholiques, sujets américains, qui se trouvent dans les différentes colonies, on atteint le chiffre de 18,853,951.

La population cathclique des co- lonies est la suivante : Philippines, 6,565,998 ; Hawaï, 33,000 ; les îles Samoa, 3,000 ; l’île de Guam, 9,000, et Puerto-Rico, 953,243.

La population des Etats-Unis et de ses colonies étant de 84,233,069, et le nombre des catholiques de 18,- 853,951, il en résulte que près d’un quart de cette population appar- tient à la religion catholique.

I1 y a aux États-Unts 1 cardinal, 13 archevêques et 86 évêques, et les

‘pulation catholique, ont été établis par les évêques de chaque diocèse.

Si nous avons bonne mémoire, il y a quelques années, Mgr. Ireland, dans un sermon prononcé à Dubu- que (Iowa), portait à 15,000,000 d’âmes la Dopulation catholique de ce pays.

Le Catholic Directory se trompe- rait-il? Ou Mgr. Ireland aurait- il forcé la note dans son mémorable sermon ?

En tout cas, la population catho- |1lque des Etats-Unis ‘‘devrait être’ non pas 11,000,000, ni même de 15,000,000, mais de 30,000,000 au bas mot, de l’avis même de Son Eminence le cardinal Gibbons.

Une dépêche de Fernie, B. C., annonce que les ouvriers de la mine du Nid de Corbeau sont en grève. Les travaux sont suspendus dans les mines Michel, Morrisey et Ruis- seau du charbon, dont Fernie est le centre. Tous les grévistes travail- laient pour la compagnie de char- bonnage de la passe du Nid de Cor- beau. Ils sont au nombre de 2000.

Ils se plaignent de la réduction des salaires à Morrissey, à 40 cents la tonne ; de l’emploi des appareils McGinty à Michel ; de la rareté du bois de charpente dans les mines et de ce que l’Union de district des mineurs ne soit pas reconnue.

L'emploi des appareils McGinty a donné lieu à beaucoup de protes- tations. Il s’agit de mâtset de cordages à l’aide desquels ont mon- te les wagonnets. Cet appareilest, paraît-il, très dangereux pour les mineurs.

L'Union de district des mineurs a été organisée pour empêcher la compagnie d'ouvrir une ou deux des mines, tandis que les hommes de la troisième seraient en grève. Cette mesure a été prise par les mi- neurs dans un but de protection, mais la compagnie n’a pas voulu reconnaître l’association.
