Strange Dwellers in the Sea

Lawrence, which was cruising outside the bar abreast of Coney Island, New York, a few days ago, noticed after breakfast some-_ thing on the water which looked like red seaweed. ‘* They are shrimp,” cried the captain, Jooking through his glass. But William Conklin, a guest on the boat, said they were the color of boiled shrimp, and the crew gave upthe idea that they were fish, Soon the boat passed throngh myriads of them, and the sailors then saw they were worms of a red color, about two inches in length and a quarter of an inch in thickness. They were swimming near the surface of the water. They kept together like schools of fish. They seemed a sclid mass, and presented the appearance

of ared sand bank. The crew lowered a bucket and obtained some. On close in-| spection they were found to be similar to sand worms, but much smaller. They had two small claws resembling those of a lobster. The pilots had never seen any- thing of the kind before. Joseph Smith. an old sea captain, supposed them to be whale food. He said whales live on ani

Upon coming tothe city ina tugboat from the pilot station the crew passed another. shoal of red worms about off Hospital Island. The shoal was similar to the first one they had seen. This was about lla. m. They fished up a bucket- ful of the worms and found them to be of the same kind as the others. Mr. Conklin nut two of the worms in a small bottle.

ey lived until six o’clock that night. They have since changed to a green color. It was the opinion of those on board the pilot boat that the worms had come from some other latitude, and had swum together into all the bays.

Two men in Williamsburgh say that | they saw acres of red worms off Roffel Bar and on the bay side of Rockaway the same morning. They thought they were running into a sand barand quickly put) their boat sbout. They then discovered that there were. millions of the worms covering the whole bay.

According to the description of sea worms given by Agassiz, these worms could probably come under the head of planaria, or those of the leech order, They swim with the undulating motion pe- culiar to the leech.

In the churchyard of Alston Moor, Eng , is (or was,) the following curious epitaph, | more than a hundred years old:

If it is rejected in that county after two years’ square trial, how can the advocates of temperance hope to success- fully appeal upon its behalf and have it adopted in other counties / On the other hand, if the liquor interest, after shouting for two years that prohibition was a failure in Halton, after demonsfrating time and again to their entire satisfaction that it vs absolutely ruining the business of the county, and that the people were tho roughly and everlastingly sick of the whole thing, and Jonging with a consuming de- sire for a chance to show the truthfulness of their recantation by voting it away— if, after all this they do not succeed, and the people of Halton decide a second time that the Scott Act is a good thing to have there, the liquor interest may as well hang up its little harp on-its little willow sapling and go into another line of business, for the day of its interment under the heavy clods ot a straight-out national prohibitive vote

a Lincoln’s Way

There is an amusing story, not a new one by apy any means, of the method Mr. Lincoln adopted to settle a contest over a postmastership, which had greatly annoyed him. There were two candidates in the field, and petition after petition poured in upon the weary President, and delegation after delegation had rushed into the White House, to argue the Claims of the rival aspirants. Finally, after he had been bored for half an hour by a fresh delegation, Mr. Lincoln said to his secretary: “This matter has got to end somehow. Bring a pair of scales.” The scales wefe brought. ‘‘Now put in all the petitions and letters in favor of one man, and see how much they weigh, and then weigh the othér candidate's papers.” Jt was found that one bundle was three-quarters of a pound heavier than the other. ‘‘Make out the appointment at once for the man who has the heaviest papers,” ordered the President, and it was done. —The Century.

A Left-Handed Compliment

Not very long ago a man considerably under the influence of drink entered one o! the city omnibuses in Glasgow. On being seated, he soon became troublesome and annoying to the other passengers, and it was proposed to eject him. This would have been done instantly, but a genial and kind-hearted reverend Doctor, who was also a passenger, interposed for him and soothed him into good behavior for the re- mainder of the journey.
