ll1l'ICS Cayuga Engages In Eventful Shore Patrols

The Cayuga. under the com- mand of Commander James Plo- mer, formerly of Winnipeg and saint John and now of Victoria. had these experiences during the

patrol:

1, Bombarded Communist shore position, both by day and by night: -

2. Was herself the target of un- comfortably accurate enemy fire;

3. witnessed a dog fight between UN Sabres and Communist Mlg's:

4. Landed medical assistance for the crew of a UN bomber after the aircraft had crash-landed;

5. Saw several members of her crew have their baptism of fire in a sharp exchange between one or her motor cutters and a Red machine-gun post.

The Cayuga returned from the patrol with a ship's company that was happy at having so much activity and proud of the way the ship had acquitted herself.

Ranged Up And Down

Acting independently. the Cay- uga ranged up and down the west roast of Korea, from the battle line to the northernmost point of the war area.

Meanwhile. stretched out on a big limb. Tufity the Lynx watched Mrs. I..igthtfoot and the twins out in the moonlight with a growl- ing feeling of disappointment. They were not coming in his dir- ection. He had hoped that when they let that thicket they would come along -the shore of t-he pond and pass under the limb on which he lay stretched. He was hungry for a dinner of tender young Deer. He had been living on Mice and Rabbits. and now and then s Grouse. and he had not had too many of these. He drew his lips back in A silent snarl as he watched Mrs. Lighufoot and the twins moving away. lie would have to look somewhere else for his dinner.

enemy gun positions. the destroy- er drove a number of Red troops into the open and contlntfed to splash shells among them as they took to their heels. It was not possible to estimate the number of casualties but there appeared to be quite a few. -

In a nice piece of understate- ment. a report from the shlpsald, "lt is assumed the Cayuga's shell- flre upset the enemy's morale."

Another time. with the navigat- ing officer, Lieut. Peter Chance. of Ottawa and Halifax, hard at work. the Cayuga used radar to approach an island through a nar- row channel at night. Once in position. she illuminated her tar- get with starshell and followed up with a bombardment that achieved excellent results.

Took Chsnncl soundings

Laler. running again into shal- low waters. she sent one of, her motor cutters to take soundings of the channel ahead. At the same time. a second motor cutter was despatched to have a closer look at possible Red installations ashore.

The second boat. charge of Licut. Donald R. Sax- on. of Yorkton and Saskatoon. Sask., and with a. party of eight men aboard. moved about six miles away from the ship. Llcut. Saxon spotted some enemy gun cmplacements and had just sent back a report saying no sign of life was evident when a machine gun opened up on his boat. The fire was promptly returned from a Bren gun manned by 0rd. Sea. .lohn.PhIlllps. of Montreal, who kept it up until the boat had got out of range.

Lleut. Saxon later had high praise for Phillips and the other members of the boat's crcw, most of whom had come under direct fire for the first time and had behaved like seasoned veterans. Concealed Enemy Batteries

The Cayugn's next experience was the most exciting of the pn- trol. Moving to an area near Chlnnampo. she nosed up a nar- row chnnncl and prepared to bombard a number of enemy pos- itions. However. she suddenly found herself coming under fire from guns which had been mount- ed and concealed since her pre- vious vlslts to the same area.

Four ranging rounds had just been fired from the destroyer's guns at a selected target when a flash was observed from the shore. Seconds later shells splash- ed 200 yards off the ship.

As the enemy fire climbed to- ward her. the Cayugn quickly-sllp- ped her anchor and withdrew stern first at seven knots-n tricky op- eration in a shallow. twisting chan- nel which was difficult enough to negotiate when going ahead.

Shells from. the enemy guns straddled the destroyer but fail- ed to score any hits. though it was estimated that about 100 rounds were fired at her. The Cayuga. in reply. fired 155 rounds and observers reported hits the target area.

During the coursegof the patrol, the Cayuga received word that an American bomber had come down in enemy territory. not far from where she was operating. The destroyer proceeded to the area in the hope she might res- cue the airmen. However, they managed to reach friendly terri- tory and the Cayuga's part was limited to the provision of med- lcal treatment for two shock cases. The other members of the plane's crew were unhurt.

An expert in translating French and Russian into English, Sherry is one of 69 U.. N. interpreters working in the main Assembly and the six committees of the U. N. at Paris. Officials say there are pro- bably only about 100 persons in the world who possess the fluency for the translation job.

Sherry puts a little more into his job than most others. getting vthe right inflection of sarcasm when the delegate speaking is ex- cited. llc doesnlt aim for a literal translation of the words the speak- er is saying but rather tries to give the sense of each sentence.

Former Islander Dies" in lieu York

.!Mr. William Westaway, 65, formerly of Montague. P. E. 1., passed away at St. Luke's Hos- pital. New York, on November 10. The deceased had been a mem- ber of the Royal Canadian Mount- ed Police as a young man and during the First World War had been retained in Canada for home defence. He had later gone to the United States where he stud- ied the undertaking profession. At the time of his death he was operating a funeral parlour un- der the name of Westaway and Orllly. He was honoured with a Masonic funeral. and was also a valued member of the Orange Lodge.

He leaves to mourn his passing four sisters and two brothers. Three of his sisters are register- ed nurses. vWlth him at his death were Mrs. C. W. MacDougall. R. N., and Mrs. Margaret Whidden. R. N., of Roslindale. Mass. The other sisters are Mrs. (Dr.) Mc- Cue of Silver Lake. R. N., and Belle. of Brookline. The two brothers are Joseph of British Columbia and Rev. R. J. West- away of Calgary.

A very successful Study Group was held in Hunter River School on November 18. Miss Ena Mor- rison was elected president and Miss Jean Carr secretary.

The supervisor, Mr. Wilson Rom spoke on economic and social trends, as well as educational

In regard to the reading pro- gram the use of the Guidebooks was stressed. as well as vocabulary drill and "Think and Do" books. The value of workbooks to help the child read and think was also stressed. Group projects such as choral reading were suggested to interest pupils in reading.
