A ‘verrible Accident.

TERRIBLE BOILER EXPLOSION—-FOUR PER- SONS INSTANTLY KILLED — A HEART- RENDING SCENE.

BELLevinie, Oni., Sept. 24. Que of the most terrible and fatal acci- dents that ever occurred in this vicinity took place yesterday afternoon between six and seven o'clock, at the farm of Mr. Geo. Caldwell, eighth concession of Thur- low, and about one and a halt miles east ef Zion’s Hill. Mr, Owen Reid’s steam) thresher had been engaged during the day by Mr, Caldwell, and through some defect of the gauge or carelessness on the part of the engineer the head of steam carried was not fully known. ‘The con- sequence was that the boiler of the thresher exploded with terrific force, tearing everything into pieces and seatter- ing death and destruction on all sides.

The Methodist Ecumenical Couucil closed some days azo. It is considered to have been a great success. It includ- ed among its members some of the ablest men belonging to the Christian church. Its sessions were open to the public by ticket ; and its proceedings were watched with great iuterest on all sides. The

ranged and thoroughly well carried out from the beginning to the close. One of the most interesting sessions held was iv which Mr, Arthur, who, now

of Methodism on society. He was followed in a brief speech by a black bishop from the African Methodist Zpiscopal Church, and

Death was instantaneous in his case also, William Malcolm, son of Mr. Wu. Malcolm, of this city, who was form- erly foreman of the gas house here, was instantly killed. He was employed on the machine, and was a promising yousg man of about tweuty years. Miss Viola Caldwell,daughter of George Cald- well, aged eleven years, who was silting near the machine watching the opera- tious, was struck by a piece of the engine and had her neck broken. She, too, died in a few moments. But these casual- ties, horrible as they are, did not com- plete the injuries inflicted upon life and limb. Mr. Caldwell himself was seri- ously, but it is thought not fatally in- jured. This is a terrible list for one such accident at one place. The engine was shattered into a bundred pieces, and part of it was driven into the barn, set- ting fire to the straw. By great efforts the flames were extinguished before they had done much damage. The scene of the barn after the accident baffles de- scription ; the anguish of the bereaved friends was heart-rending in the extreme. While some cared for the wounded others gathered about the mutilated

forms of the killed, and rent the air with their cries. Three active met, who a few moments before

were exchanging greetings and antici- pating naught but happiness, lay upon the ground bleeding and dead. The little Viola was not mutilated, and her death so sudden the countenance retained a natural expression. All around were broken and splintered parts of the en- gine, and the shades of night closed over one of the saddest and most crushiug scenes ever witnessed in this part of Can ada. Mr. Geo. Caldwell, who suffers such a terrible loss by this accident, is a brother of Dr. Caldwell, dentist, of this city, and is a widower ef about four years, He owns a farm of 200 acres, and is a prosperous farmer. [iis mother resides with him. Further particulars of the threshing machine disaster show that Mr. Caldwell was not injured, and that it was not his daughter Helen but her cousin Viola or Lottie who was

killed. The two children were sitting with their arms intertwined when the explosion took place. A _ por- tion of the boiler struck Lottie

killing her instantly, and Helen was severely scalded. The little one who was killed was a daughter of David Caldwell,

The opinion was ex- preesed that Ross’ offer was not an aecept- enceof Hanlan’s challenge, which named $2,000 to $5,000 a side as the stakes, and & telegram was sent to Wallace Ross asking him if he had declined for $2,000 a side. Until an answer is received from Ross it was decided best to take no action until on Tuesday night. The feeling in Toronte is that Hanlan having won the ehampion- ehip match of $1,000 sheuld not try to force Ross to row for a larger sum. On the other hand, others say that he should not be expected te go into training for a race with a man that he has beaten twice unless the atakes be something worth the effort. No matter what Ross’ answer wili be we think the feeling among ‘the friends of Hanlan is a race between the Torontenian and the New New Brunswicker should take place this year,and we have reason to believe it will not be the fault of Hanlan if it does not. Davis, who was with Hanlan on the

sculler’s ability’ to win and is for the match being erranged without delay. If Ross is willing tha contest will prebably take place at Silver Lake. Outside the clause regarding the amount of stakes, Hanlan appears satisfied with the articles sent by Ross, but there seems to be aw exception to the words perfectly smooth and will likely suggest that ‘‘practically” be substituted for **perfectly.”

The cable flashes the distressing an- nouncement that ‘‘ Twenty-four hours con tinuous rain damaged crops in Scotland.” It is feared that this will have the effset of almost total ruin—-for the previously wet season throughout Great Britain left but a meagre portion for father injury there. Canada has been especially favored in her weather and crops during this summer when compared with the failure of harvest in Europe from exeessive rain and the de- struction of so much grain in the Western States by the long-continued drought and seorching winds prevalent there, whereby in some districts the yield was positively scorched and rendered unmarketable, mak- ing it it only to fatten stock. Emigrants should note the important fact that the vicissitudes of weather here are less risky than the dist ~icts stretching te the south.

A fortnight ago the Sheriff and 100 police embarked on board the Queen's ship Merlin to evict Lord Mayo’s tenants was the greatest exterminator in corths western

ov the island of Innisturk. Lord Mayo,

the fastest of these was a Dr. Edwards, fism Chicago. He landed at Glasgow early in the summer. He left it en route for London astride of his bicycle, which car- ried him to the big town safely and rapidly, and from thence to Newhaven. Having time for travelling on hand, he crossed over the channel and bicycled it through Holland, Germany, Switzerland and France, recrossing the channel in time for the Council, before which he read an interesting paper on the results of Method- ism. His average speed on the wheels is not stated; but his time must have been pretty fast.

The report comes from Afghanistan that Ayoob Khan has been defeated by the Ameer and has fled to Herat, abandoning {his guns and baggage. The Ameer’s suoc- cess, like his recent defeat, was caused by Afghan fickleness.
