An initial warning: don’t take this survey too seriously. Our goal is to stimulate discussion of sexuality on campus, not to present a detailed analysis. This survey received a greater number of responses than our 1993 poll, but these results still use a small data base. However, we feel that these results are accurate for the surveys received, and they can give you an idea of what is happening on campus sexually.

Responses:

Of the respondents to the poll, 60% were female, and 40% were male -- this is the same breakdown for the student population at UPEI. When reading the following percentages, they will not all add up to 100% since some people skipped questions. Several surveys were spoiled, due in part to the efforts of one guy who stuffed the boxes with his responses. Did he think we would not notice the fact that several dozen male, gay, respondents

answered identically to all questions, and they remarkably all had the

same handwriting? To go through that much effort, we have to assume that certain guy needs a life.

Sexual Preferences:

88% of total respondents were heterosexual, 3.8% were gay, and 7.7% were bisexual. The majority of the bisexual respondents were men -- only 3.8% of women claimed to be bisexual. Interestingly, there were no surveys from lesbian students.

The Chastity Challenge: Approximately 22% of students surveyed are virgins. Ages

students explained that they remained virgins for reasons such as religion,and ‘‘waiting for Mr or Ms Right.’’ Other people were not quite so happy with their situation as expressed by one student: ‘‘I’m 22 and I haven’t. (Dear God, I wonder can you save me?)’’ Sexually active students lost their virginity at the following ages:

13 and under - 12%

14-11%

15 - 16% —

16 - 15%

17-21%

18-12%

19 - 6%

20 - 5%

21 and over - 5%

The average American loses his virginity at age 19.

Oral and Anal:

Oral sex seemed a popular choice for students: 81% of women said that they had received oral sex, and 79% had performed oral sex on their partner. 83% of men claimed to have received oral sex, and equal number performed oral sex.

Anal sex had less popularity: 21% of women surveyed had participated in anal sex.

Almost half of the men polled had engaged in anal sex.

Contraception:

Many respondents used multiple forms of contraception, with condoms (50%) and the pill (42%) being the most commonly used. 17% of students use the highly unreliable withdrawal method. Foams and Jellies are prefered by by 3% of students. Women were more likely to use contraception regularly -- 35% -- and a shocking 12% of men rarely or never use any

Partners: The number of sexual partners ranged from none to 31. The breakdown was:

their partner was faking an orgasm.

Almost half of the students surveyed had a one night stand. 63% of men had done so, as opposed to 40% of women. Of those men, 67% said that they regretted their actions, while 31% bragged about it. Of women who had one night stands, 80% regretted it.

Cheatin’ and Fakin’:

33% of respondents admitted to faking an orgasm. Slightly more women than men ‘‘fake’’ -- 38% to 26% respectively. One man eloquently expressed his opinion on faking an orgasm by saying: ‘‘could I?’ Overall, 73% of students

Self Satisfaction:

55% of students polled admitted to masturbating. Of the male respondents to the survey, 72% admitted to masturbating, compared with only 37% of women. Frequencies varied, but the average was twice per week. Many students responded that they masturbated ‘*occasionally,’’ ‘‘rarely,’’ and one student stated ‘‘unknown.’’ Go figure.
