Various indications from time to time ap- pearing on the surface show that the old- time distrust of each other by the French and the English speaking Canadians is readily passing away. Sir Hector Langevin’s reception in Ontario, warm and hearty as it was, showed that so far as the English-speaking inhabitants of Canada are concerned they are not influenced by the miserable spirit of petty intrigue which re- joices to.sow dissensions between the Eng- lish and the English speaking French who live in this portion ef the Queen’s realms. The warmth of the reception accorded to Mr, Caron, Minister of Militia, in Prinee Kd ward Is!and,and other Eastern, provinces, shows that the evil spirit is being—has been exorcised. The same cordial feeling is shown on the other side. Hon. Mr. Loranger spoke warmly the other day about the good understanding—the *‘ harmon that exists between the English and French inhabitants, all of whom are equally proud of being subjects of Her Majesty Queen Victoria.” It has sometimes been made a charge against Sir John that he has sought to develop cordiality between the two. But the petty provineialism to which this charge owes its origin, is rapidly passing away.— T'orente Mai.
