often figured im stories and pictures of mart- time life in the far East are rapidly dis- appearing, at least as far as Japan ts con cerned. Ship building in Japanese style is so far giving place to foreigu construction that by-and-bye there will be no such thing as a junk except in paintings.

Mr. J. G. Bourinot, F. S. S., has been appointed Honorary Corresponding Secre tary in Canada, of the Royal Colomal In stitute. A better appointment could not be made. The Institute has already been preductive of much good in disseminating useful information concerning the Colonies, and Mr. Bourinot’s connection with it in the capacity just mentioned cannot fail to be to the advantage of the Dominion.

The Halifax papers copied an item from one of the Moncton papers, telling of the largely increased receipts at Moncton Sta- tion, some $10,000 odd in four months, doubting if any other station could show a similar increase. Phew ! we can beat that all hollow here at Stellarton. For the four months ending July the receipts were $14,- 116.00 over the corresponding period of last year. The receipts for the month of May were double the receipts of May last year. For the year ending June there were 105,000 tons coal and coke forwarded from Stellarton Station.—Trades Journal.

At Spring Lake, N. J., last Saturday, a rumor.was started, persumably by the keepers of a bathing house, that Oscar Wilde would bath in the surf at ll am. The announcement brought an immense crowd to the beach. Eleven o’clock passed and the throng showed signs of disappoint-

Some curious statistics connected with the progress of literature in Japan have been obtained from a report prepared by the Japanese Minister of the Interior. appears that the number of works published last year was 4,910, as against only 3,992 in the previous year. In this total were comprised 545 works on political topics. published by order of the Government, as against 281 in 1880; 255 works on juris- prudence, as against 207 ; and 25 on poli tical economy, as against 15. There were 164 geographical works, 267 on medicine, 116 on mathematics, 17 on chemistry, and 20 on natural history. The principal in crease was in works of history, poetry, and drawing; while of light literature, such as novels and fairy tales, there were only 193 As might naturally be expected, a large number of the 4,910 works published in Japan last year were translations or adap- tations of American and European books.
