vate advices te the St. John Telegraph state that repeated cable despatches were received at tho State Department in Washington, from Mer Majesty the Queen, inquiring as to the condition of the Presi- dent and expressing the deenest sympathy with him and with the natiep. Though the despatches were only what might have been expected,they made a deep impressien. It is understood that the Governor General now in Halifax, has been making hourly inquiries as to the state of the President.

Formosa Mrsgion.—The Rev. Dr. McKay, returned missionary from .Formosa, will vis t eur city and hold a public meeting in one of the churches (probably St. James’ Church). on Sabbath afternoon, about four o’eleek.' Dr. McKay will give some account of his labours and suceesses in « new field of missionary enterprize. He is, without question, one of the most remarkabl: missionaries of modern times. The interest he has awakened, where - ever he has gone in Canada, has been very great, and the Christian people of the com- munity have a rare oppertunity of hearing from the lips of the living missionary, a stor as remarkabie as any which ¢an be found in history of Christian missions. Serious Acctpen).—A little bey, nephew of Alexander McKinnon, of Esdale Foundry, met with a bad accident yesterday evening. He way playing wit a number ef ether boys in a on Bayfield streets.
