Prospects of War.

Henry Clews remarks: whatever may be the present aspect of war prob- abilities, we are bound to _ interpret England’s purposes in the light of the fact that she has chartered 67 steamers for military service; which means that the Government is contemplating an extensive campaign.; and the demand for $40,000,000 for special war service has a like significance. It is therefore among the possibilities that an easing of the money market may be coincident with less favorable relations with the foreign financial centres. Under these circumstances, it is to be expected that large and responsible operators will act cautiously in respect to long com- mitmerts. But, at the same time, the market appears to be in a sound con- dition, with little in it to force much more liquidation ; and it therefore is inviting to brief ventures upon the ups and downs in good stocks.

Analogous Arguments.

There is an argument used by old fogies as follows : “I don’t buy goods from firms who advertise, because the fellow who advertises must increase the price to pay for his advertising.” This is a parallel‘of the questions : Does the substitution of steamboats for sailing vessels increase the cost of carrying?
