sen. Since it was the name that I suggested that became the official name of the paper, I feel that I must comment on some of the accusations made in Mr. McGaughe'y’s article.

On the night that the name was chosen, fifteen people showed up for the meeting. The meeting and its purposes had been publicized for a week, but only fifteen people gave a damn about the name of the paper. As Mr. McGaughey points out in his article, this was a meeting of an “unofficial staff. Jim Horn- by was the only person who had even an in- terim position. At this time I was Ombuds- man of the union and was not planning on working on the paper, but as a member of the student union I had suggested a name and I wanted to be there when the name was cho- sen. So what the hell is all this talk about “Sng minorities” and political manipulation. I was not a member of the staff and I had not planned on working for the paper in a for- mal way, yet the name that I suggested was chosen. According to the analysis given by Mr. McGauthey, the name suggested by Mr. Hornby (the smuggest of the smug) should have been chosen. All the names suggested were discussed, some were discussed very little because the people felt that they had been suggested in jest or were ridiculous. All the others were discussed, and voted upon when there was no clear consensus-

So let us hear no more about ‘CLIQUES’ within the paper. Anyone who wishes to work on the paper can help make decisions. If there is a small group presently making decisions, it is not because of any inhibiting structures but because there are so few peo- ple willing to work on the paper. As I write this article, there are only four people here. There is more to putting out a paper than hastily writing a couple of pages of copy and passing it into an Editor. Before you start making accusations, clean up your own back yard.

Mackay was jumping up with truly radical glee from nb (that rhymes) while cub (in the perjorative sense) reporter terry was his usual irrelevant self. “have [let will travel” he observed. several misc were in to hear parts of laurier over :1 over, and our elaborate files were severally stepped on. we decided not to print debbis letter to the editor(s) tho it was funny as hell. hiya wheather whoney. i very seldom see dry land for i am an alligator man. dave did his thing while john was sloppin coopted. Watch this space next week for the first chapter of the grate canadian navel. enough irrelevany (the word) for this weak... another Me of ostentatious desperation next time.

“Why not Make it Official”. About the only thing I can think of, besides an emotional response, are a few facts.

Point one: this paper belongs to those who are interested in it. Anything which ob- viously requires a vote, or which any staff .member wants brought up for a vote, will be voted on at the next staff meeting, (which will always be Sunday night unless a special meeting is called.

‘ Point two: I had signs up on both cam- puses late last Summer requesting sugges- tions for names. Then several days before the meeting which chose “The Cadre” I dis- tributed an additional 17 posters (which I al- so made) announcing that the name would be chosen at this meeting. My conscience is clear.

Point three: Names which I received were The Red Times (an old joke), The Varsity Rag (anbther joke), The Cadre, The Oracle, The Campus Chronicle, The Forge, The Mino- taur, The Millennium, and the N orthumber- land Straight. The last four were my own. '

I believe that these few facts preclude the necessity of a point-by-point rebuttal- The Cadre won over The Forge on the first vote after the others had been eliminated by concensus of those present.

I consider the incident a glowing exam- ple of staff democracy (perhaps unmatched in the annals of CUP), since a then non-staff member at the meeting had his suggestion
