Dear Mr. Editor,

This letter is addressing ‘‘Really Confused’’, who expressed concern about the clarity of the environ- mental tips in the March 25th edition of the X- Press:

The water energy conservation suggestions came from an Environment Canada guide. This booklet offers many points concerning environmentally friendly habits for individuals to consider, and hopefully practice.

Since our choices and our actions will determine the future of the environment, it is favourable to do what you can to make the world a safer and healthier place to live.

Regarding the clarification of the five suggestions:

1. Alternatives to trying a ‘‘sailor-shower’’ would be to either simply shorten your shower time all together, or to take a bath (try not to overfill, up to one quarter full is recommended). Since ‘‘Really Confused’’ could not decide which tap to turn off first, perhaps coordinating both at the same time would alleviate potential scalding or freezing.

2. Refrigerators are found in most homes to store perishable goods, more energy probably would notbe consumed by keeping a container of water alongside these other items. The temperature in the fridge is constant at approximately 3 degrees in comparison to the water and energy that are wasted while allowing a tap to run until the temperature is suited to quench your thirst. (usually around 5 degrees celsius)

3. Maximizing you wash loads cuts down on energy and water wastage since washing would occur less frequently. The point is that only washing acouple of garments in a machine at a time is a waste when other items could be cleaned along with it.

4. Flushing the toilet after using the washroom is sanitary and iscommon sense, although this facility should not be used as a garbage disposal. Cigarette butts, paper tissues, paper diapers, dental floss, plastic tampon holders, and condoms can create prob- lems at the sewage treatment plant.

5. If youneed help locating your water meter, ask your parents, roommates, landlord, or call the local Water Commission.

Thank your for your concern and your interest. If _ you still find that these explanations are not clear, feel free to attend a Green Committee meeting (Fri- day, April 3, 12:30 PM atthe barn) to address the issue and to offer some of your own suggestions.

Dear Mr. Large:

Last week I gave instructions to the Maintenance Department staff that they were to remove posters, notices, etc. that appeared in places other than desig: nated bulletin board areas. I’ve since been told that some students thought that election notices were beir primarily singled out. I want to assure youand the rest of the student body that this definitely was not the case. Nowhere in my note to Don Coles did I mention anything about election materials. For some time now, I have seen notices taped, tacked and sta- pled to the finished wall surfaces and to the glass in the exterior doors. It just got to the point that ina _ couple of areas, (the Admin. entrance to Kelly and Main in particular) the situation was getting out of hand. In addition to giving a less than presentable appearance to the buildings, this practice damages thi walls and woodwork and also causes the Maintenance staff extra work because they have to remove the taps tacks and staples.

There was no intent to destroy the signs and poster. The staff were instructed to relocate the poster and notices to bulletin boards where possible and if not possible to save the material so it could be returned t the owner. The one exception to the removal policy the ‘‘PIT’’. Iagreed with Jo-Anna Murphy that we would not disturb items posted in this area.

At present, I have Don Coles and his staff assessing the situation throughout the campus and where there are obvious needs for additional bulletin boards, they will be installed.
