The | retiring Mayor desired and anticipated re- | election, for he was a Liberal, and the | Liberalsin the council outnumbered the Conservatives by one vote, but one Liberal councillor, Samuel Cox, by name proved inconsistent, was won Over to the Conx servatives, and when voting time came, amid intense excitement, he voted not for the Liberal. The Mayor, when the result was known, made the following Speech: “It is on record that about eigh- teen hundred years ago one Judas sold his Master for thirty pieces of silver. Struck with remorse he went and hanged him, self. 1! would recommend Mr. Samuel Cox to go and do likewise.
