Tue Grand Division of this Island met in apnual session ia this city yesterday, D. Rogers, Esq, @ W. P., in the chair. Owing to the lateness of the morning trains both east and west, the session did not open as early as was announced. The Cotten Exposition formally opened at 2 o'clock to-day. One feature of the day was the making of two snits of clothes, one for Gov. Colquilt, of Georgia, and one for Gov. Hon. Mr. Mackenzie and Sir Alexander Campbell, having declined the appointment as Trustees of the Canada Pacific Railway land bonds, Messrs. Smithers and Therne, ef New York, and Hon. John Hamilton, have been appointed such Trustees. Sir A. T. Galt is said to have very little hopes of securing a Commercial Treaty with France. Mr. Fraser, Commissioner of Public Works of Ontarie, has gone to New York for medical advice.

Dusuin, Oct. 26. A box containing several thousand peunds werth of checks and notes was stolen from a messenger of the National bank to-day while he was signing a receipt in the post office. The Local Government board has die- missed Dr. Kenny from the post of paroch- ial medical officer. New York, Oct. 24.

Denny Lyons and Frank McGowan, New York ‘‘ bruisers,” fought a prize fight near Weshawken, N. J., yesterday. Both men were terribly punished, and this afternoon Lyons is reported to be dying. Darrorr, Oct. 25.

The Anchor Line steamer Clarion was wrecked on the rocks at Limekiln Crossing this morning, and now lies in eighteen feet of water. Crew saved.

as dee 0 ol : On Tuesday the postponed Somerset Races were held at the Somerset’ Driving Park. The attendance was small, there being not above a hundred present. The races, too, were not so exciting as many ex- pected, but this is no mere than what might have been looked for, owing to the dis- advantages Mr. O’Ronahan had in the weather. In the two year old race there were four entries, two ef which were ‘* Abdallah” colts and two ‘‘ All Rights,” the speed and beauty ot the latter being much admired. Mr. Newton Lee's “ St. Julien” camefin first and Mr. Henry Clark's ‘* Lightfoot” second, with the ‘‘ Abdallahs’ bringing up the rear. The running race was won by Mr. Patrick Keefe’s mare. As to the order on the grounds, it was truly a miniature Donnybrook Fair. Everyone trying to make himself as hilarions as pos- sible. One man wasseverely hurt by being threwn from his wagon while returning from the grounds, and other minor acci- denta are reported. - Journal. nothin

Lavxcu.—There was launched on Tuesday, at Summerside, a magnificent three masted scheonergfor Hen. Wm. Richards, Bideford. She is a vessel of 600 tons, and has been built under the owner’s. special eupervision. A little difficulty was experienced at first in getting her started en the launch-ways, but onee iu metion, she glided most majesticaliy into her future element, and was safely moored at Queen’s wharf, afew hours after- wards, This handsome vessel certainly re- flects great credit upon her builder, Mr. John lamsay, and she is the first schooner built here that has been fitted with irom masts She is to load with oats fur England, and is expected te be ready to sail in about three weeks. Her dimensious are: length over all 165 feet, breadth 284 icet and depth of hold 174 feet. —Journal.
