S. E. Smith, Vermont, writes: —“My first parchase of early rose was four quarts. 1 was advised, in order to get the largest yield from the seed, to cut up and leave but one eye to a piece and drop one piece in each hill. The advice was followed, and I will now say that the crop has never been excelled in size of tuber o | from the same number of hills. Others have testified to the same truth, but still persist in using more seed than is needtul. rule now is, two eyes in each hill, hills not over fifteen inches apart, and Ido not see “ny reason tochange the prac tice.”

A.T. Lane, Ontario County, N. Y. writes: —"I give my experience for the past four years in reference to sizeof potato seed. First year, large poiatoes cut totwo eyesina piece, and one piece ina hiil, result,a yield of 160 bushels good-sized market potatoes to the acre, with but view small ones. Second year, the same kind of seeding, with similar return. 1 was not satistied with this yield, so the third year seleeted all medium sized potatoes cui off and discarded the seed end, cut the remainder once in two, and planted one

London Advertiser: We observe that Mr. Maeoun says that sheltered places in the Northwest are subject to early frosts. The whole secret of early frosts is presence of moisture at no great distance from the surface. Land with watery sub-soil is always frosty. On this continent summer frosts have been knewn to extend as far south as the Gulf States. Where the land is thoroughly drained there can be no summer frosts. But where the land is a cold springy sub-soil the heat of the sun makes no impression beyond the surface, and the little heat that is accumulated during the day will on a clear night be given off by radiation long before the night is wholly gone, and the tempersture of the surface rapidly falls to the freezing point. It is no uncemmoen thing to see fields of grain in which all the wet places have been eut off by frost, while the drier portions of the field are unharmed. We know of districts which wereat one time anually subject tosummer frosts where summer frosts are now wholly unknown.

The Boston Globe has a word to say for Newfoundland. The island, it says, hasa great future before it, in the Opinien of an English traveller. Con- trary to the general opinion,the climate is salubrious. Its fisheries yield $4,500,- 000 a year, and its mines preduce 45,000 tons of copper annually. In- cluding the inhabitants of the coast of Labrador, its present population is now 190,000, of which 50,000 are engaged in the fisheries. In the interior of the island are large tracts of farming lands to the extent of 2,300,000 acres. which can be purchased by settlers at 30 cents an acre. Its distance from Va- lentia, in Ireland, is only 1,640 miles, and he belicves it will before many years become thickly populated by settlers from the British Isles,

With a No. 8 Stove we cooked for a party of seven, giving them broiled oysters, steak, lamb chops, and baked biscuit, in 45 minutes, at a costs for gas of 4) cents, On another occasion we gave a dinner in courses of twenty men, the bill of fare as follows : Broiled shad, beef steak, roast quarter of lamb, baked biscuit and coffee; heating the water for washing the dishes tour times, re-setting the table three times. I bought one of your No. 12 Gas Cooking Stoves last September, for use in my restau- rant, and have used it ever since for baking, broiling and stewing.

1 can say for it that it is always ready and does its werk rapidly; that there is no dust, no dirt, no surplus heat, as we are using only that portion that we need, and as soon as the article is cooked the gas is extinguished and there is no waste. I think it will do the same amount of work at less cost than coal, even at the high price of gas. It takes much less room than a coal range that would do the same work. J am perfectly satisfied with it and would not be without one for double the price.
