UPEI Blood Clinic a Success (Vampires Disappointed)

This year's blood collection clinic at UPEI was well-received- so well received there are already plans to have a second one in March.

"It was an outstanding suc- cess," says co-ordinator Allen Veale.

Over 100 people registered to donate, surpassing the 65-person goal set for that session alone.

Of course, this is only an esti- mated figure of the number of donators - there are still numbers to be tabulated from the blood clinic that was held at the downtown clinic. From October 21 to October 25 UPEI and Canadian Blood Services held a week-long cam- paign to collect blood from students.

It also included a first-time ever blood clinic in the courtyard of the Student — Centre.

He is pleased at the response from the campus community, saying they must develop the commitment of younger people when it comes to donating blood. »

Veale says there will likely be another clinic in March, between midterms and final exams. The on- campus clinic may move to the Sports Centre to allow for more beds and donors. He also wants to see extended hours; the recent clinic was so busy, they had to turn some people away even though collection was extended an hour.

At the next clinic, there will also be a day session and evening ses- sion so they can attract more people, who may have had classes during the first clinic.

Veale wants to thank everyone who took part in the clinic.

And to those who entered a ballot for prizes - don't despair. The draws haven't taken place yet, but will in the near future.

"We can take great pride in knowing that the unselfish act of donating blood has improved the quali- ty of life of many individuals and given life itself."
