Congratula— tions to all those who took part in a very successful endeavour, and the stage is set for a new year that emphasizes that "a land fit for wild— life is a land fit for people".

Mom-hols grace new stomps

Canadian mammals are gracing new stamps re— cently issued by Canada Post. Designed by Brian Tsang, the lynx (43¢), killer whale (57¢) and wapiti (74¢) are attractive paint— ings of these well—known mammals. Upcoming stamps will include 2 wildlife and habitat conservation stamps in June, 4 butterfly stamps in July, and 6 more mammals in Oct- ober. They should be available across P.E.I.

Form Conservation Advisory Committee

The Natural History Society of Prince Edward Island has limited time during its monthly meetings to develop policies on controversial issues. In the past a separate working group or committee has been creat— ed to address controversial issues and to bring recommendations either to the Society at a regular meeting or to the Executive Council.

To create positive changes in government policy or to influence public actions to benefit flora and fauna, the Society requires the time to discuss these issues in detail. It is the Executive Council's opinion that a standing committee should be created to discuss and to bring action recommendations to the Society's regular monthly meeting or, in cases requiring an immediate response by the Society, to the Executive Council of the Society. A motion was carried at the Feb. 2 meeting to form the committee. Gary Schneider will serve as interim chairperson until one can be elected. Gertrude Partridge, Helen Ferguson, Susan Stephenson, Dan McAskill and Ruth Richman also volunteered to be on the standing committee, which has taken the name "Conservation Advisory Committee".

Terms of Reference:

1. To discuss public actions and government policies which effect the flora and fauna of the province;

2. To develop strategies to offset or eliminate the negative effect of such public actions or government policies on the flora and fauna;

3. Where appropriate in regard to these strategies, to provide recommend— ations for action by the Society to the Society‘s membership at a reg- ular monthly meeting or annual general meeting or, in instances that re- quire immediate action, to the Executive Council of the Society;

NOTE: This Committee shall not have the power to act independently on behalf of the Society except where it is directed to do so by a motion which specifies the action to be taken on behalf of the Society. Membership: This committee shall consist of a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 9 members of the Society, one of whom shall be elected chairperson of the committee at the first meeting of the committee following the Annual General Meeting. The committee's meetings shall be open to members of the Society but only appointed members shall be allowed to cast votes. Term of the committee is to the next annual meeting.
