year tothe date ot the Maine explosion, forty-eight days, twenty-eight vessels, all] coalers, left. There have been 6,250 tons of coal sent to Fort de France, in Hayti, aince April 9. What this was for is not explained by any actual need of Fort de France itself. Nassau, St. Lucia, where | 3,770 tons were despatched on May 6, and where the Spanish fleet appeared on May 13. Port Antoni, Vera Cruz, aad Kingston, have all lately had shipments.

Nearly all the opposition members went to the station to see him off, giving him

three enthusiastic rounds of cheers as the train pulled out.

In the House of Commons, upon being criticised for his method of conducting the Public Work Department, Mr. Tarte threatened that if tke criticism® were contioued he would not stand it any longer .

So far as could be gathered from Tarte’s vague threats he was giving it to understand that he would turp outall the empleyves of the late governmenton the Public Works staff.unless the opposition ceased their criticiem.

Mr. Foster replied to Mr Tarte’s threat by saying that if the government wae mean enough to punish employes for the criticisms of the opposition he wonld regret it. He did not want to bring trou- ble upon Conservatives who remained in the public service, but if they were to suffer for his own proper criticism of the goverument he would not the less go on with performing his duty.

Maprip. May 28.—A despatch received bere gives details of the arrival of the Span~ ish squadrom at Santiago.

Cervera was given a great reception by the inhabitants and was banquetted.

During the progress of the banquet the Archbishop of Santiago said it is not suffi- cient for the Spanish forces to be victori- ou® on the sea, but the Spanish flag must float on the capital of the Uniced States.
