Monrreat, June 22.

Yesterday witnessed one of the biggest popular demonstrations in this city’s h a- tory. The demonstration was in honor of the rebels of 1837 and 1838 and fully 50,000 people gathered at the Roman Catholic Cemetry to witness the cere- monies. Three processions composed of the various French-Canadian Societies were formed in different parts of the city and marched to the Cemetery accompanied by bands of music and detachmeats of fire- men and policemen. There was a big sur- prise in store tor the crowd at the ceme ery, It was the intention to bring the remains of Dr, Chenier, one of the revels, from St, Eustache into the city and bury them in consecrated ground in the Moatreai cemetery. Archbishop Fabre’s permission fer the exhumation was obtained and gre: t preparations were made for the burial, |Wienthe rozeedings ¢ mmenced yesterday |however, Dr. Murcel, of Steiastach, who } started the movement, addressed the crowd and said that at the lest moment Arch- | bishop Fabre had countermanded his orders

Speeches were made by a number of local orators who eulogized the rebels of 1837 as heroes. Cure Sentenne, of Notre Dame, waa present and blessed the decorations and intoned the Liberas for the souls of the victims.
